Connection failed: SQLState: '08001' SQL Server Error: 17 [Microsoft][ODBC_SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets] SQL Server sql server error does not exist or access denied. Here's what I've tried: not a firewall issue: tried with firewall on SQL Server turned off, and client turned off. Also able to telnet 1433 from client and that works fine. not an access issue: I can login from many different computers, including the SQL Server itself using the account i'm using on client (using SQL Server authentication) i can ping the hostname and IP address. (i've tried both) The only thing i can think of is that the client computer is windows server 2003, and has various roles setup: File Server Application Server Terminal Server Domain Controller DNS Server I don't know why these services are setup, but for the time being i can't shut them off. Would it be any of these, and if so, is there a way to disable any of the aspects of them, that might be blocking SQL. Any advise truly appreciated! sql-server connection odbc share|improve this question asked Nov 15 '12 at 20:00 russds 47211236 another thing: I'm able to create ODBC connections from other clients f

I choose Database: SQL Server 2005/2008 (using native ODBC) and Authentication: Database Authentication and then I give my SQL Server 'sa' credentials. I am getting the following error: SQL Server 2005/2008 (using native ODBC) error 8001, Severity 0 - SQL Native Client Named Pipe Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server (see attached screenshot) I have verified that my SQL Server Instance is set for TCP\IP and Named Pipes connections.. this is so frustrating... Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?Martin.Fink Jun 15, 2011 5:07 AMCorrect AnswerHi there, the first question would be if you can connect to the SQL server from the same workstation outside of Erwin DM. The error message you are seeing is not generated by Erwin, but it could also occur if some of the connection information you entered on the ODBC connect dialogue in Erwin is incorrect (For example, if you are connecting to a named instance) . For the 2005/2008 connection you need to have the client connectivity software installed. If you get a similar error outside of Erwin I would advise to check the following blog from MSDN which covers Troubleshooting tips for connection problems: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sql_protocols/archive/2005/10/22/483684.aspx I hope this helps.
