server 2000 with remote clients at 3 locations. Sites had been connected via leased line. We switched everything to internet/VPN. Everything works, but a connection failed sqlstate 01000 sql server error 14 several times a day, the clients receive this error: Microsoft SQL Server LoginConnection failed:SQL State: '01000'SQL Server Error: 53[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]Connection open(connect ( ) )Connection failed:SQL State: '08001'SQL Server Error: 17 If they exit and log back in, then it's OK. Here's what has changed: New ISP at HQ connection failed sqlstate 08001 sql server error 2 and remote sites with new static IPs. New firewalls/VPN setup. VPNs setup to alloow all traffic between sites. Internal IP addresses/computer names did not change. Only exception is the HQ gateway is different, but all network settings were updated to reflect that. I have all of the remote firewalls pinging the HQ firewall every 30 seconds and have not seen any hint of a problem in the firewall logs. Seems to be isolated to SQL. None of the SQL server or client configs were touched. I know little about SQL. What do the errors above mean and does anyone have any ideas? THANKS!

database from other computers. Reply to Topic Printer Friendly Author Topic jlm159 Starting Member USA 3 Posts Posted-06/21/2011: 11:13:16 I am setting up a new domain controller that is running Server 2008. We run an https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/27684811-1a59-4273-b7ed-3cc990b4f20a MRP software that installs SQL Server 2005 Express on the computer that stores the database (the DC in our case). I am trying to get it setup and am having trouble getting it functional for all computers on the network. I set up the database and brought over a snapshot from the old server, so there is good data in the database. Currently, it works on the domain controller itself, but when I try to connect http://www.sqlteam.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=162101 from another machine, I cannot set up the ODBC Connection. I get the following error: Connection failed:SQLState: '01000'SQL Server Error: 53[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]ConnectionOpen(Connect()).Connection failed:SQLState: '08001'SQL Server Error: 17[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Drive][DBNETLIB]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.I have tried to match the settings in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express to those on the old server machine. I did the same for the SQL Server Configuration Manager.I am not sure what to try from here so I would appreciate any help.ThanksJim Manz russell Pyro-ma-ni-yak USA 5072 Posts Posted-06/21/2011: 11:35:20 Make sure that remote connections are enabled.Make sure firewall isn't blocking.Make sure users attempting to login have permission.Make sure you have the instance name correct in the ODBC connection. jlm159 Starting Member USA 3 Posts Posted-06/21/2011: 14:48:29 How do I make sure that the firewall isn't blocking and that the users have proper permission? I have validated the other two.I followed some directions from http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc646023.aspx. This was to allow the SQl server access through the firewall. However, I am still getting the same error. When you refer to the permissions, do you mean domain permissions?Jim Manz russell Pyro-ma-ni-yak USA 5072 Posts Posted-06/21/2011: 15:58:35 Make sure the login exists, I mean, for users attempting to connect. There is further the possibility to import data from other db's. If I try to connect to the other db the error appears. The application is connecting with sql server authentication and its own user. I also set db_owner privilegs for this user in the import db. I tried also with the user sa and windows authentication. The Error is allways the same. From the same client I can access without any problems with the management Studio. The SQL server has a named instance and the client is connecting with ftp. Connection failed: SQLState: '08001' SQL Server Error: 17 [Microsoft][ODBC_SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets] SQL Server does not exist or access denied. Here's what I've tried: not a firewall issue: tried with firewall on SQL Server turned off, and client turned off. Also able to telnet 1433 from client and that works fine. not an access issue: I can login from many different computers, including the SQL Server itself using the account i'm using on client (using SQL Server authentication) i can ping the hostname and IP address. (i've tried both) The only thing i can think of is that the client computer is windows server 2003, and has various roles setup: File Server Application Server Terminal Server Domain Controller DNS Server I don't know why these services are setup, but for the time being i can't shut them off. Would it be any of these, and if so, is there a way to disable any of the aspects of them, that might be blocking SQL. Any advise truly appreciated! sql-server connection odbc share|improve this question asked Nov 15 '12 at 20:00 russds 47211236 another thing: I'm able to create ODBC connections from other clients fine. It does appear that the problem lies with this particular client, either with the roles setup, or perhaps something else. Thanks! –russds Nov 15 '12 at 20:05 add a comment| 4 Answers 4 active oldest votes up vote 4 down vote accepted Found the issue. For some reason, even though SQL was not in use on the client, it was installed, and by going to All Programs -> Microsoft SQL Server -> Client Network Utility, i found that the protocal TCP/IP was using port 4717.
