I can also use SQL Server Management Studio and connect to that SQL Server. But for some reason when I try to connect using the ODBC Data Source Administrator to set up a DSN I get the following error. Connection Failed: SQLState: '01000' SQL Error:

I would add that neither the client nor the server enforce encryption so its a little confusing to me that I would be getting an ssl related error. sql-server-2008 odbc windows-server-2012 share|improve this question edited Apr 15 '15 at 4:52 marc_s 454k938711033 asked Apr 14 '15 at 21:28 Bastyon 142212 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote accepted After turning on ODBC logging got the event message A fatal error occurred while creating an SSL client credential. We have a SQL Server 2008 running on its own VM and several applications on other VMs that use it. Sometime last week (we're not exactly sure when), one application starting having a problem. Tech tried restarting a service, but that didn't help, so he restarted the server. Now both applications on that https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/1435709-unable-to-establish-connection-to-database VM have problems. Several of the services required for those applications won't start (Actually they start then stop) and we find this error in the Event log: Unable to establish connection to database: [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (SECCreateCredentials()).]SSL Security error We have googled that error and found nothing useful. Two additional clues. We are unable to rdp to this VM (I have to access it from the host console) and WindowsUpdate fails with an error code: 80072F8F (searched that too, no joy) The other application running on its on VM is happily connecting to the DB so, I am lost. Services have been unavailable for 36 hrs and counting; any ideas?
