the top ODBC Data Source SQL Server Connection - Login Failed For User up vote 11 down vote favorite 2 I have moved my database from an SQL 2005 to a server with SQL 2008. I am now trying to create an ODBC Data Source. I am using "With SQL Server authentication using a login ID and password entered by the user" and have entered my Login and password. The Login is visible in SQL Server Management sqlstate 28000 (error 18456). the step failed Studio under Security-> Logins. The login also contains the exact properties of the same login in my old server. When I hit next after entering the username and password I get: Connection failed: SQLState: '28000' SQL Server Error: 18456 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Login failed for user 'myUser'. After reading this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555332 I realized that the server properties were set to "Windows Authentication Mode" only, but even after changing to "SQL Server and Windows Authentication Mode" I am still having problems connecting. I can connect with my Windows account though. sql-server-2008 sql-server-2005 odbc logins share|improve this question edited Dec 7 '12 at 18:08 asked Dec 7 '12 at 16:11 jpsnow72 246139 Just a note. When you change the Server Authentication from Windows Authentication to Mixed Mode. You'll need to manually enable the SA login if you want it available. Personally I would keep it disabled in your case since you have access through your Windows acount. –Brandon leach Dec 7 '12 at 23:04 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 9 down vote accepted My answer... From my comments: The issue was that the server was set to "Windows Authentication Mode" only. To fix this I Right click the server - > Properties Click "Security" in the left side of the "Server Properties" dialog Changed server Authentication to "SQL Server and

I am using the SQL Server driver and can see the server in the drop down list when asked which server I would like to connect to. I am using SQL authentication over TCP/IP. The error occurs when ODBC tries to connet to SQL server to http://www.dbforums.com/showthread.php?1217794-MSSQL-ODBC-(SQL)-connection-issue-(sqlstate-2800) obtain the default settings. The error I receive is as follows: Connection Failed; sqlstate '28000'; sql server error: 18456; [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Login failed for user 'XXXX' I have tried setting up alternate SQL Server users with varying security rights on the server but am not able to setup the ODBC connection. I am setting the ODBC connection up on a windows XP SP2 machine. The remote server is running Windows server 2003 (patched upto date) and MS SQL server 2K (SP3). The connection is over a LAN and does not pass through any firewalls (hardware or software). I can create the ODBC connection without issue locally on the server. This is my first time creating an ODBC connection to a Windows 2003 Server and I am wondering if there is some additional config I may have missed out. Many thanks. The following connection string works fine in my site: "Server=servername; sql server error database=mydb; user id= web.account; password=PassW0rd!; Integrated Security=SSPI" However, when I try to set up a DSN (using the 64-bit odbc admin) I get the following error: Connection failed: SQLState: '28000' SQL Server Error: 18456 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Login failed for user 'web.account' Keep in mind, I'm using the same account and password I use in the connection string (which works). It's weird too because the error occurs right after I click 'Next' on the "How should SQL Server verify the authenticity of the login ID?" page. It seems like the odbc admin does not even try to connect to the server to verify the credentials. What can I check to prove this / How can I fix this? Things I've tried: I have checked the server authentication mode, as proposed in other solutions, and that is set to "SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode", as it should be. I have tried creating both a User and System DSN - both get the same error, this seems like further evidence that it's not trying to con

Before you dive in If you are NOT a DBA (Server Administrator) then read this. We had a number of online private chats using our website chat feature and we have identified there are a number of situations where you cannot do anything about it! We are aware some of you might be very new to this so I will provide you with simple list of questions or steps to check if you are in the 'cannot do anything about it' group. Before you start "fixing" it please go through the list below: Are you the person managing the server or the person who installed sql server (e.g. personal pc/laptop)? If no or you don't know, then there is a high chance you don't have permissions to fix it. What does it mean? It means you can only do what you are in control of (typing username, password) or trying steps that don't involve changing server configuration. If nothing works contact your server administrator (DBA). Are you connecting from an app (Visual Studio etc.) and not SSMS? If yes then try to connect from SSMS if it works then problem might be in the app. If no then is there any user account that works? Yes? Then username may not exist or might be mispelled. Password might be incorrect. Account may be disabled. No? Try next poi
