Clients that have the Force Protocol Encryption option set ON sql server error 772 on the client may fail to connect to SQL Server if clients specify an IP address for the server name. Please try: Use the server name to connect to SQL Server. You can use the SQL Server Client Network Utility to set up an alias for the server that is running SQL Server or implement name resolution by using WINS, DNS, or LMHOST file so that you can connect by server name. Or Set the Force Protocol Encryption option to ON on the server by using the SQL Server Server Network Utility. If you turn on encryption on the server, all the clients must connect by using encryption and you must install a certificate on the server. For more information, refer to the "Net-Library Encryption" topic in SQL Server 2000 Books Online. Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Join the Community! Creating your account only takes a few minutes. Join Now I have no idea if this is really a SQL DB problem or not, but here goes... We have a SQL Server 2008 running on its own sql server error 18 ssl security error VM and several applications on other VMs that use it. Sometime last week (we're not exactly sql state 08001 sql server error 18 ssl security error sure when), one application starting having a problem. Tech tried restarting a service, but that didn't help, so he restarted the server. Now both applications microsoft odbc sql server driver tcp ip sockets ssl security error on that VM have problems. Several of the services required for those applications won't start (Actually they start then stop) and we find this error in the Event log: Unable to establish connection to database: [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (SECCreateCredentials()).]SSL Security error We have googled https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/6e959113-e1a0-4a3f-a13a-27f42c225970/not-able-to-connect-to-sql-server-ssl-security-error?forum=sqldataaccess that error and found nothing useful. Two additional clues. We are unable to rdp to this VM (I have to access it from the host console) and WindowsUpdate fails with an error code: 80072F8F (searched that too, no joy) The other application running on its on VM is happily connecting to the DB so, I am lost. Services have been unavailable for 36 hrs and counting; any ideas? SSL connection will fail if the time is too far out. 1 Datil OP Robert for Microsoft Feb 9, 2016 at 7:55 UTC Brand Representative for Microsoft Is firewall turned on? Is it configured appropriately? Are the vNICs online and allowing traffic both directions? What OS is this running? This is clearly not a SQL Server problem. It's an OS/NIC issue. are the drivers up to date? 1 Jalapeno OP Al6695 Feb 9, 2016 at 8:07 UTC One of the first things we checked, date/time settings on all servers is fine. Thanks for the suggestion. 0 Jalapeno OP Al6695 Feb 9, 2016 at 8:11 UTC Firewall is on, but we have made ZERO changes since it was started I forget how many years ago. I checked the vNICs and that all seems ok, I was able to remotely connect to some of the subsystems (Event Log, for one). OS is Windows Server 2008 R2. I didn't believe it to be a SQL problem, but I'm out of ideas here. I'll double check the drivers, but don't see why that would be an issue all of a sudden, with no warning. Thanks for the thoughts, more avenues to explore. 0 Jalapeno OP Al6695 Feb 9, 2016 at 8:
