How to Avoid this Error The following solutions have resolved this error in the majority of cases: Make sure short file name creation is enabled on the target machine. You can check to ensure that the target machine does not have short file name creation disabled by navigating to the following registry entry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem Make sure the value "NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation" is equal to 0. This indicates that short file name creation is enabled. A value of 1 indicates that this functionality is disabled. You should change the value to 0. After modifying this value, the target machine should be rebooted before attempting to launch the setup again. Note: If the target machine should normally have short file name creation disabled, it can be disabled after the install completes by resetting "NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation" to 1 and rebooting. To ensure that the Windows Installer Service is properly installed and configured, it is recommended that users install the file InstmsiA.exe on Windows 95/98/Me or InstmsiW.exe on Win NT systems. I took the opportunity to remove the BE agent using Programs and Features, rebooted the server etc and tried to re-push the agent getting the vague error 1603. It looks like 1603 is a generic error for 'something went wrong in the install process and I'm rolling back'. Before I really delved into the log files I followed the following article to remove the BE Agent manually: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH130940 Nothing, still 1603. I also removed SEP and deleted everything related to Symantec (with a snapshot and reg backup), still nothing. I looked at the log and noticed: 12-20-2014,13:27:48 : Application: {2E214FDB-1B99-4BF3-BEE4-43B82EB1D6AE}, Command line: UPGRADINGPRODUCTCODE={856D9205-4AA3-48FB-ADD2-CE6EUnable To Install Symantec Endpoint Protection On Windows 7
