script creates a COM object and calls a method that may or may not succeed. When the method returns failure, the script calls WScript.Quit(255). When it fails the
Task Scheduler Last Run Result 0xff
Last Run Result column for the task correctly indicates "(0xFF)", as opposed to "The operation completed successfully (0x0)", but history shows "task completed". Bottom line, for purposes of the "If task fails, restart every..." setting, the scheduler doesn't consider ERRORLEVEL == 255 to be a "failure", it treats it as if it was successful, the task 0x1 error in task scheduler does not get restarted. I also tried setting the script timeout to 60 seconds and then making it sleep for 65535 ms on failure, no love. If I manually end the task, it sees *that* as failure and the task is queued for a restart -- but that's hardly a solution, it rather defeats the purpose of scheduled tasks... Hmm, check that, it attempted to execute the task immediately after I manually ended it, status was "Queued" for a little longer than the retry interval I specified, then status changed to "Ready"... nice... So is this entire feature broken, rendering my question moot, or what? It can only get the task status which is that whether the task has run or not. If the task has run, whatever the result of the task, Task Scheduler will

Does anybody knows about a complete list? For example, I have not been able to locate anything about the error code 0xFF. Windows Task scheduler usually runs other things (batch scripts, command line programs etc.), and these are the things that will have documentation on result codes. –Nick.McDermaid Mar 19 '14 at 1:43 Added extra info to original post, @ElectricLlama. Thanks. –Sopalajo de Arrierez Mar 19 '14 at 10:51 1 Yes, as mentioned below, notifu.exe has returned 0xFF (255) and windows scheduler is just echoing that. What does the notifu documentation say that means? If you can enable a log for notifu, you should do it and check the log. –Nick.McDermaid Mar 19 '14 at 12:07 add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 4 down vote accepted Process exit codes are process specific. By convention a value of zero indicates success. The only reserved value is STILL_ACTIVE which has value 259. That is returned by GetExitCodeProcess when the process is still active. To understand what the values mean you will have to consult the documentation of the process in question. share|improve this answer answered Mar 19 '14 at 10:55 David Heffernan 428k26582947 While that convention is real, Task Scheduler does not consider most non-zero exit codes to be a failure. I had a batch file that would launch a bulk loader task at one of my clients that I needed to run everyday in the morning. error in task I created the task as normal but once I told it to run, it was displaying the following code as a result: (0XFF) After some checks I noticed that I seems like the Task Scheduler does not like the long path I had put to my batch application. Eg: "C:\Users\someUserName\Documents\someUserName\myBatchFile.cmd" It would appear as if it has problems with the double quotes surrounding the path to the file. My solution was: In the program/script field I left just the name of the batch file and no double quotes. Eg:myBatchFile.cmd In the "Start in (Optional)" field I wrote the path to the file and no double quotes. Eg:C:\Users\someUserName\Documents\someUserName\Clients\ I also made sure that I removed the "pause" command from the batch to avoid the Task Scheduler not being able to find if the task completed or not. Found this information helpful although the error code was different: http://www.blogfodder.co.uk/2012/4/20/win-2008-task-scheduler-with-return-code-1-0x1 Hope this will assist someone else to sort out issues. I can run the .bat file manually without any issues and it only takes about 10-15 seconds to complete. I'm trying to setup a scheduled task in Windows Server 2008 R2 to run it periodically. When i run the task from Task Scheduler the status staying running for several minutes until i manually kill it. The last run result is (0xFF) even though when you look at the history event log for that task it says that it completed successfully. I've tried running the task with a service AD account. I added that account to the local security policy to allow to run as batch job. I've also, just for testing, added that same account as a local administrator. I've also tried running the task from my account which is a Domain Administrator.
