In Eclipse however, I've had to explicitly cast my values as float. Still though, I type mismatch cannot convert from test to annotation get errors that I don't understand. For instance, shouldn't putting an f at the end of this statement fix the type mismatch (Type mismatch: cannot convert from double to float)? springing[n] = .05*(.17*(n+1))f; And even on simpler statements like this I get a type mismatch. What am I doing wrong? float theta = .01f; java casting share|improve this question edited Feb 23 '11 at 1:55 AVD 71.9k1489139 asked Feb 23 '11 at 1:20 Miles 4042830 Do you in fact need to use floats, or could your program run as well (with some more memory usage and more precise results) with double? This might be easier :-) –Paŭlo Ebermann Feb 23 '11 at 1:41 I'm still unclear on the difference between doubles and floats. Is there a page that explains this? –Miles Feb 23 '11 at 1:51 a float is a 32-bit single-precision floating-point value, a double is 64-bit double-precision, see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floating_point –Jesper Feb 23 '11 at 2:57 add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 8 down vote accepted Well,

(actually, the compiler only care about range -- as you can lose precision in both directions) However, if you really know that you won't lose stuff, or don't care if you lose stuff, you can force the compiler by *explicitedly* casting the double to an integer. int result = (int) Math.pow(x, n); Of course, if you start getting some inaccurate answers... keep in mind that the compiler told-you-so, and you forced it anyway. In the beginning there are so many 'subtle' Java lessons that burn up so much personal time. But indeed this is the way it is with almost everything in life. To be able to post a coding frustration on this blog, after personally trying almost endless different ways of re-writing, and then after applying your simply concise answer results in much debris being cleared away.
