How fix permanently? up vote 5 down vote favorite 1 When opening an application installed from the App Store (TextWrangler) I am prompted to sign in. After entering the correct Apple ID and password I get an error, An unknown error has occurred. This only happens with http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/63911/app-store-an-unknown-error-has-occurred-apple-support-fix-was-only-temporary one app, other apps installed are OK. This error also occurs when I sign in to the App Store. So its not just affecting a single application. This also seems to be affecting my iCloud login. It prompts for a password then just seems to hang. I spoke with Apple Support yesterday. They had me delete all Caches from /Libary/Caches, ~/Library/Caches, and a few cookies then restart my iMac. This fixed the issue yesterday. Today I start my Mac and get the same error again. I called Apple Support and got the runaround, I was told to use ExpressLane which doesn't really seem to have a solution. How can I permanently fix this error? Previous attempt to identify/triage the error Searching online turns up similar suggestions to clear caches and cookies, but also some more extreme suggestions involving network settings that I am hesitant to try. more. After going through various apple forum posts and deleting plist files and caches, nothing seemed to https://www.igorkromin.net/index.php/2013/03/25/fixing-the-an-unknown-error-has-occurred-in-app-store-login/ work. Then I came across a post that suggested that the problem http://osxdaily.com/2014/08/13/fix-app-store-could-not-complete-purchase-unknown-error/ could be with the Ethernet controller. This is the error I was getting. All it said was "An unknown error has occurred", the Console didn't have any other messages, overall, not very informative. Below are the steps on how I managed to resolve it. Turned out the problem unknown error was the Ethernet controller after all! In my Network preferences, I've had my old Ethernet controller set up (since I migrated my Mac over from a MacBook Pro), this was no longer functional of course. After deleting the Ethernet controller (I also removed the FireWire network and the modem that was configured), I've restarted. The next thing to do unknown error occurred was to add the actual Ethernet controller that's in the computer now, unfortunately it did not show up. Oh well, since this was a Hackintosh, I went back to Multibeast and installed the Lnx2Mac Realtek driver and restarted again, this let me add a new Ethernet controller to my network setup. I set the IP address to manual just in case. Getting back into App Store and logging in, everything works now! It's strange for App Store to require that Ethernet is configured even if it is not being used. -i Share this post Sun Mar 24 22:31:17 2013 Apple, Hackintosh About Igor Kromin I'm an enthusiastic software engineer and consultant interested in many fields including J2EE, programming, electronics, 3D printing, video games, anything Apple, and even growing chillies. the way things are supposed to work. Sometimes things aren't so hunky-dory, and one of the more peculiar errors from the App Store is the incredibly vague "We could not complete your purchase - Unknown Error" message. Having experienced this error message myself not long ago when updating apps on a Mac, and some time in the past when updating OS X, we received a question on Twitter (yes, you can follow us there and ask us questions!) about the exact message as well. While it's frustrating, the good news is that it's usually very easy to fix with either one or both of the following steps; verifying the Apple ID, and - here's where it really gets fun - accepting everyones favorite iTunes Terms And Conditions. Verifying the Apple ID in Use is the Same in iTunes & App Store Verify in both the Mac App Store and iTunes apps that the same Apple ID account is used for both apps - if it's not, log out so that both apps have the same Apple ID account Quit out of the Mac App Store and quit out of iTunes (yes, quit out of iTunes if it's open) Relaunch the Mac App Store and try updating or downloading the app again, it should work flawlessly Simple solution, right? The problem appears to be triggered by an issue with the Apple ID accounts associated with the App Store, making it frequently experienced by users who have different Apple ID's for whatever reason. This is yet another reason to try and keep a single Apple ID in use for all of your user activity, though there are certainly times where that's not possible, particularly for international users. Check & Accept iTunes Terms & Conditions Still seeing the "Unknown Error" error message and it's preventing you from downloading anything? You may have an issue with the iTunes Terms & Conditions. Yes, seriously. All 50+ pages of those exciting terms and conditions may be the cause of your inability to download and update apps. The good news is this is also super simple to fix: Launch iTunes, or quit it if it's already opened but has just been updated and then relaunch iTunes Accept the new Terms & Conditions, after reading them thoroughly of course! Quit and relaunch App Store You should now be able to download from the App Store as intended. This solution was found by one of our commenters (thanks Mike!) , who discovered some time ago that if you update iTunes without choosing to accept the Terms and Conditions that have changed, this error persists in both iTunes and the Mac App Store until those new Terms
