I have used the same technique to update my iPad 1 and iPad 2 with iOS 5 and the software installed without any problems. Remember that IPSW files are 700+ MB in size so you should probably use a download manager that can resume broken downloads. Many of you might be receiving an error like I did when trying to update your iPhone or iPod Touch to iOS 4.0 that states, "The iPhone "blank" could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (3002). Well, I figured out how to solve the problem with a simple alternative. Read on to find out how if you're experiencing this problem. The problem occurs when you press the "Update" button; instead, press the restore button and get iTunes to restore your device to iOS 4.0. That is what iTunes is doing when "Update" is pressed anyways. This should work as an alternative, and the error notification shouldn't appear again. Thanks to this method, I now have iOS 4.0 running on my iPod Touch 2G!
