I do have a decent amount of DNS experience under my belt though, and this is not making any sense. I am working closely with the admins responsible for these devices and can get tests performed as needed.) We have run into an issue where we cannot add conditional http://serverfault.com/questions/693670/windows-2012-cant-validate-forwarders-without-a-root-zone forwarders that point to BIND nameservers under Windows Server 2012. Adding the IP address of the server results in a validation error: An unknown error occurred while validating the server. Looking at the query log on the BIND server, we found something rather interesting: the Windows DNS server was querying for . IN SOA, i.e. the SOA record for the root nameservers. No query for example.com. IN SOA at all. It attempts to query for root authority and doesn't continue when it receives a response of REFUSED. client 192.168.203.20#59067 (.): query: . IN SOA - (192.168.208.201) client 192.168.203.20#50553 (.): query: . IN SOA - (192.168.208.201) client 192.168.203.20#55468 (.): query: . IN SOA - (192.168.208.201) Madness. To humor it, we reproduced this problem in the lab. I downloaded a copy of the root zone and configured a . zone (commenting out my root hints), and lo and behold, this error no longer occurs. I really don't get this. I'm providing an authoritative nameserver that shouldn't have to provide answers to . SOA, and as matters stand I'm going to have to add this zone to all of our production servers just to play nicely with Windows 2012. In my experience, a forwarder should only be concerned with whether or not the target
takes a few minutes. Join Now It looks like this problem started a week ago. I can't really pin point any changes that https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/369169-dns-servers-aren-t-communicating-correctly would have affected this short of windows updates. I have been getting complaints from my staff that web browsing has been drastically slower. I find that when I statically assign a google DNS things start working fine. I am getting error messages in my event logs randomly stating my DNS server is unable to create a resource record: The DNS server was unknown error unable to create a resource record for 08d0c81f-d338-4790-9f7b-54bc20441616._msdcs.DOMAIN.com. in zone DOMAIN.com. The Active Directory definition of this resource record is corrupt or contains an invalid DNS name. The event data contains the error. When I attempt to ping one DNS server to another it looks like it is resolving an IPv6 address instead of the IPv4. I'm at a loss where dns unknown error to start investigating. When I attempt to view the NameServers from the DNS properties window I get "an unknown error has occurred when trying to validate the server". So spiceheads, where to start? Also, if all else fails, I would recommend that you contact Microsoft Support for assistance. They offer support at a flat fee (between $250 and $300 I believe) and will work until they resolve the problem. Just something to keep in your back pocket. 0 Jalapeno OP Helpful Post AdmiralBeamish Aug 12, 2013 at 8:16 UTC Have you tried restarting the service? 0 Cayenne OP mhache Aug 12, 2013 at 8:23 UTC I just restarted the services.
