I typed in ftp>open 192.xxx.x.xxx (my IP address). I got an error message: connect :Unknown error number. Even with the firewall and Kaspersky disabled, the problem continues.I then installed the Filezilla client (not the Server), but still could not connect.I have looked over the computer to make sure all ftp options were checked. This included checking the “ftp” in the Internet Information Services under Window Components. (I do note that under Administrative Tools, the ISS does not show up).Is there anywhere else in the computer that could be causing the problem or an option that I should investigate?Help is appreciated. You'll only get a response if you have a FTP server running on the target machine. _________________### BEGIN SIGNATURE BLOCK ###No support requests per PM! So if you want to share files you have to install a FTP server, yes. _________________### BEGIN SIGNATURE BLOCK ###N

I have this problem on XP Pro but not XP Home. Ive tried to upload a https://forum.filezilla-project.org/viewtopic.php?t=7446 website from Dreamweaver to www.angelfire.com and keep getting ftp error occurred, cannot make connection to host. I tried other free hosting sites to no avail. I tried using other ftp clients like filezilla, firefox plugins and ftp.exe and get the error "ftp: connect :Unknown error number" . I used a couple of ftp test websites to http://www.xpheads.com/forums/microsoft-public-windowsxp-network_web/76592-ftp-attempt-yields-ftp-connect-unknown-error-number.html connect with angelfire and that was successful. I pinged angelfire and that was successful. I added dreamweaver in the firewall settings to allow pass-through as well as ftp.exe but no success. I unchecked the passive FTP in tools/options in the browser. Im out of ideas.does anyone else have any? Thanks! Just run "ftp computername". You can also test this by trying to ping the machine in question: "ping ftp.computername" will fail to resolve (with a slightly more meaningful message than the FTP client gives), whereas "ping computername" will respond to ping (unless security software is preventing this). share|improve this answer answered Jul 19 '11 at 6:31 Stefan Mohr 349110 it shows could not find the host error –Manoj Jul 19 '11 at 6:59 Make sure your FTP server software is able to respond. You can verify this by running "telnet computername 21" (turns out telnet is not enabled by default: fettesps.com/windows-7-enable-telnet). Also make sure your FTP server is setup to use port 21 (the default), or else you'll have to specify the port when you run ftp. –Stefan Mohr Jul 19 '11 at 7:04 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draft discarded Sign up or log in Sign up using Google Sign up using Facebook Sign up using Email and Password Post as a guest Name Email Post as a guest Name Email discard By p
