Re: CS3 when saving message "an unknown error has occurred" (Beth_Titchiner) Nov 7, 2007 7:44 AM (in response to (Jake_Kiley)) AArrrrrrrggghhh!!!!!!! phew.. sorry. I have the same problem and I have come to a schtuck. The problem began out of the blue in my illustrator CS2 which was working an unknown error has occurred illustrator cs5 fine before, so I upgraded to CS3, and the problem is still there, I have tried removing the preferences, I have uninstalled all versions of illustrator including preferences from the PC and reinstalled only CS3 brand new straight out the box. I think it's ridiculous that we have paid £2000 for the New CS3 master collection and it doesn't work properly! how can adobe release software with a problem so big as this and charge so much for it? My boss rang adobe yesterday to ask for help and after a long while of not getting anywhere the adobe guy he was speaking to said 'I've had enough of you' and hung up the phone!!! What is that all about? we are legitimate paying customers of adobe for the last 10 years or more! I have now missed a big deadline because of this and am in a mind to asassinate someone at adobe! hahahaha. Sorry to rant guys but come on adobe! sort it out! Anyway, If ANYONE has an aswer or an idea of how I can fix this problem and get back to work I would be very grateful. some info about my project incase it helps: I am using CS3 master collection freshly installed on a Dell precision 650 PC with intel xeron processor, XP operating system, 37.6GB free hard disk space, 2 Megs of

Solutions Do one or more of the following solutions: Solution 1: Re-create the Transparency Flattner Presets file. 1. Quit Illustrator. 2. Rename the Transparency Flattener Presets file (for example, to Transparency Flattener Presets.old) located in Documents and Settings\ [username] \Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator [version] Settings. 3. Start Illustrator. Illustrator creates a new Transparency Flattener Presets file. If the problem continues, then the Transparency Flattener Presets file isn't the cause. To restore custom settings, delete the new Transparency Flattener Presets file and restore the original name of the previous Transparency Flattener Presets file. Solution 2: Repair or reinstall Illustrator. To repair Illustrator: 1. Choose Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. 2. (and feeling very frustrated), I found a few workarounds to this annoying error. I'm continually getting the "an unknown error has occurred" when I try to save various files. I cannot figure out any type of pattern or consistent behavior that causes this. None of my files are overly complex or contain corrupt fonts which I've read can cause this. I've made sure my OS and software are all up to date and even uninstalled and reinstalled the software to no avail. I contacted Adobe this weekend as I was trying to meet an early Monday morning deadline only to discover their tech support is closed on the weekend. For a company of that size I was quite unimpressed with this. I did find 2 temporary solutions that seem to work. Turning off all layer visibility seemed to consistently allow me to save the file. As soon as I turned visibility back on and tried to save (no change or edit to the artwork, simply just turned visibility on), I got the error again. Weird. Saving as an EPS seemed to consistently work. This is the solution I used to work through my project and meet my deadline. I'll surely be on the phone with Adobe tomorrow and update this post with any info I find out that can hopefully solve this problem. If you're suffering from the same aggravation, hopefully one of the above two solutions will temporarily work for you.
