for my home router/firewall. Everything is great except this one issue. I can't connect to a PPTP VPN server that I was error 800 vpn windows 8 able to just before the switchover. I am not running the pfSense internal PPTP server. I tried connecting to both a west coast and east coast VPN server that I maintain that I could connect to vpn error 800 windows 7 before. On Win XP, it stops at "Verifying username and password" and stops there, eventually timing out with error 619. I have also tried this on Mac OSX Snow Leopard and it previously worked, but does not now. I do have a Windows Server 2003 PPTP VPN server on my internal LAN that has ports forwarded to it in pfsense. Those are: TCP 1723 to 192.168.1.3 and Protocol 47 (GRE) to 192.168.1.3. I

even tried deleting the NAT and firewall rules for the internal PPTP VPN and still no luck. I can connect to the west and east coast L2TP VPNs just fine. I tried in pfsense 1.2.3 - no luckI upgraded to pfsense 2.0 (latest beta build) - no luckAny ideas? « Last Edit: March 27, 2010, 01:50:33 pm by TC10284 » Logged rugby Jr. Member Posts: 69 Karma: +0/-0 Re: Can't connect to external PPTP VPN server « Reply #1 on: April 02, 2010, 07:48:51 am » I noticed the same thing yesterday when trying to connect and test a remote PPTP PFSense setup from our office which has a PFSense box as well. I could not get authentication to work at all. We do run PPTP on our office PFSense box, but the SG565 this replaced didn't have any problems running a PPTP server and allowing PPTP passthrough to another server.I'm curious as to what the problem is. and using L2TP. It has come to my attention that many of you are are looking for a L2TP/IPSec solution, which is currently not supported in PFSense error 789 the l2tp connection attempt failed as of the version I am using (2.0.1). around with setting up a home VPN for about a week or so now, which has progressively improved. At first, I had a working VPN implementation with PPTP and life was good. https://forum.pfsense.org/index.php?topic=23914.0 But apparently PPTP is known to be less secure than other methods. So that got me thinking about beefing up my security. Here's a quick summary I found. PPTP has been the subject of many security analyses and serious security vulnerabilities have been found in the protocol. The known vulnerabilities relate to the underlying PPP authentication protocols used, the design of the MPPE https://thepracticalsysadmin.com/setting-up-an-l2tp-vpn-with-pfsense/ protocol as well as the integration between MPPE and PPP authentication for session key establishment. After discovering this information I decided to poke around for a little bit to decide what would work the best for me. There were pretty much two options when it came down to setting up my VPN server the way I wanted it. L2TP and OpenVPN. They are both considered secure and from what I've read OpenVPN is considered slightly better. The reason I chose L2TP is becuase it is built in to the VPN client on pretty much every OS these days, making client set up and configuration fairly quick and painless (I'm sure its not difficult to set up and use OpenVPN either but I didn't get that far, maybe I will experiment with it in the future). There isn't really all that much to getting things up and going. Open up the pfSense management interface and navigate to the L2TP VPN settings. VPN -> L2TP Next, we have to configure our settings.
