Top 10 RAS Problems Solved Top 10 RAS Problems Solved Dec 31, 1995 Roy Seabourne and Thomas Ollerenshaw | Windows IT Pro EMAIL Tweet Comments 0 Advertisement Microsoft Support Engineers Troubleshoot Remote Access Service (RAS) Q: How can I https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc773767(v=ws.10).aspx route Internet Protocol (IP) packets from my Local Area Network (LAN) to the Internet through an NT-based RAS client? This is perhaps the most frequently asked question about RAS. When used with the TCP/IP protocol, you can configure RAS to allow your entire LAN to access the Internet via a single Windows NT-based machine with a dial-up RAS connection. If you can't afford to put in a leased line for Internet access, RAS may work for you, http://windowsitpro.com/windows-client/top-10-ras-problems-solved but there are certain requirements that must be met first. The Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) or Serial-Line Internet Protocol (SLIP) server you use for Internet access--whether it's a Windows NT-based RAS server or a third-party server--must support routing tables that can be set up to forward packets to your LAN via the RAS client connection in NT 3.5x. Usually, you obtain dial-up access from an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Your RAS client connects to the ISP's PPP or SLIP server. You must use TCP/IP on your LAN. Microsoft provides no protocol translation for the Internet. Your RAS client machine will have two IP addresses: One will be assigned to the network card, and the other to the RAS connection to the ISP's PPP or SLIP server. These addresses cannot be on the same logical subnet, or routing will not function properly. You must obtain unique IP addresses for each machine on your LAN that will be sending packets to the Internet. There are two options for obtaining these IP addresses. First, contact Internic (the organization that assigns IP addresses) and obtain a range of addresses to use on the Internet. Second--and most common--ask your ISP to subnet its IP addresses and assign you a range for your local LAN. In either case, the addresses you use must be unique. Now, you are ready to configure the NT 3.5x-based RAS client to
VPN connection as usual. On Windows 7 it was really trivial, it didn’t ask anything beside the VPN server address and the login credentials. https://gyorgybalassy.wordpress.com/2012/08/16/windows-8-vpn-error-942/ However on Winodws 8 I got the following error message: Error 942: http://kb.globalscape.com/KnowledgebaseArticle10363.aspx?Keywords=Connection+to+the+server+was+lost The connection could not be established because the authentication method used by your connection profile is not permitted for use by an access policy configured on the RAS/VPN server. Specifically, this could be due to configuration differences between the authentication method selected on the RAS/VPN server and the access policy configured vpn error for it. You can find the problem on the Security tab of the VPN connection Properties window. By default none of the Authentication radio button are selected: The solution: explicitly select an authentication method. Thank God, it doesn’t work without it Technorati-címkék: Windows 8,security Share this:FacebookTwitterEmailLike this:Like Loading... A radio button is supposed to have at least one option defaulted. A radio button by definition is a mutually expclusive option. Meaning one or the the other not none or the other. Once you have selected an option there is no way to go back to none selected. Reply ↓ Balássy György Post authorSeptember 21, 2012 at 18:45 I couldn't agree more. I just cannot understand why they touched this dialog, it worked beautifully in the previous release.
