I have never encountered this problem before, so I was somewhat perplexed. http://superuser.com/questions/431067/windows-update-cannot-currently-check-for-updates-because-the-service-is-not-ru From the message, my first thought was to see if the Windows Update service was running. It was. As usual, the solution is never so simple. I attempted to restart the service and reboot the PCs to no avail. So, I am off to the interwebs for a solution. I did find a solution to the problem, so I thought to post it for my future reference and for anyone else who may encounter this problem. I will be posting the answer shortly. If you have alternate solutions that have worked for you, please feel free to leave a post or comment. windows updates share|improve this question edited Jun 6 '12 at 12:39 asked May 31 '12 at 15:50 Dark Lord of the Code 5382713 Pay attention to the fact that by default windows update service is set as delayed by default. Windows40 I bumped today into the following message in a Windows 7 computer: “Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running”. After some web searching https://simplecloudworks.com/2012/05/fixing-windows-update-cannot-currently-check-for-updates-because-the-service-is-not-running/ I found a simple way to fix this. According to Paul Woods the https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/27097239/ESENT-error-code-439-490-how-do-fix-SBS-2008-error.html culprit is a corruption in the following file … c:\windows\softwaredistribution\datastore\logs\edb.log if you rename or delete that file (as your solution ultimately does) then reboot the pc, auto updates will resume. This file keeps track of the update history and status and if the status cannot be determined then updates won’t run. If the windows update file does not exist (deleted or renamed) it is recreated and it is assumed that updates have never been run. Paul was in turn inspired by Michal's Notes and posted his findings in the comments section. Update Sept. 25, 2012: See comments below for extra details.
