I have also run the most recent version of AdwareCleaner, and scanned with MBAM Pro. Also ran Scannow and SURT. I am guessing I have some corrupted or missing files in the WIS. CBS file is attached. Windows 7 SP1 x64 Ultimate. Just noticed or realised yesterday that these two updates Windows has been doing on every shutdown are the same two KB2676562 and KB2813170. When I open WU and click Check for Updates I get error code 80073712 "Windows Update encountered an unknown error". When I look at my update history it's all these two KB being installed successfully, except for KB2565063 Visual C++ re-distributable security update on 21/5/2013 and KB947821 Hotfix for Windows also on 21/5/2013. But WU also says Most Recent Check for Updates 17/5/2013 which does't jibe with the above. I thought about doing a System Restore to before 17/5/2013 but the earliest I have is 18/5/2013 because every time these two darn KB install they are setting a new restore point and seem to be pushing earlier ones off the list. I did a boot time chkdsk /f and it didn't find any errors which is to be expected because this is a new drive, less than a month old, and the install is about the same age. I tried sfc /scannow from elevated command line but before it even got to 0% it says "Windows Resource Protection could not performe the required operation." I created a log file to see the output but it was empty. Also if I view ins

This is a documented issue by Microsoft and has a weird workaround. Please follow the steps below for updates to continue installing. Office KB article can be found here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2837515 Right click on the taskbar and select Properties. Click the Customize… button on the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties window. On the Notification Area Icons window, make sure Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar is checked and click OK. At this point, try running Windows Update again and the updates should begin to install properly. Not sure why this fixes the issue, but it worked for me on a couple of virtual machines running in a VMware environment. An additional thing I noticed is you can see the tray has "null icons", where they are blanks of open applications; once you hover over them, they disappear/close. Not sure if this is a bug with Windows and VMware VMs, but just thought it was a weird coincidence. If you have had this same issue, could you please drop a comment below stating whether or not you received the same issue in a virtual environment? Updated the machine a while ago, then used it, restored the old restore point to get a clean base, then tried to install updates. The symbols in the system tray where mostly blank, and when i hovered over them, they disappered. Must have been 10 or 20 blank symbols. Got 80243004, changed the Windows-Update-Symbol from "show notifications only" to "show notifications and symbol", working again. Strange.
