Error While Opening Key" Message in Registry Tags: Registry Error regedit access denied Message Servers Windows XP Last response: 12 March 2013 19:31 in Windows XP Share cscguy 12 March 2013 14:31:35 When I go to HKEY_USERS, and click on my own profile in the registry on one of our 2003 R2 servers, I get an error "Cannot open https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/892192 S-1-5....(blah-blah-blah). Error while opening key." I figured out that the SID in the error message is my own profile. Other people get that error when they log into the server and click on my SID in the registry as well. Does this mean that my profile on this machine is corrupt? I've been asking around the office to http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-1623154/open-error-opening-key-message-registry.html colleagues about this error and no one seems to know what's going on. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. More about : open error opening key message registry cscguy 12 March 2013 16:30:28 I saw in a KB article from Microsoft that I should try setting the permission for the Everyone group of the registry subkey to Full control. When I did this and clicked OK or Apply, I got error, "Unable to save permission changes on [SID #]. Access is denied." cscguy 12 March 2013 19:31:39 Nevermind; I just had to remove my profile, as it was corrupted. Can't find your answer ? Ask ! What does it show when you right click that key and select permissions? It should list the local admin group with full control and you are hopefully logging in as a member of that group? 0 LVL 66 Overall: Level 66 Windows XP 49 MS Legacy OS 23 Message Expert Comment by:johnb67672011-05-18 In the registry, go to..... HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion Rt Click>Permissions>Advanced, and make sure that Administrators has Full Control, and select the botom checkbox "Replace all child permissions with inheritable permissions from this object".... Then see if you can access the Windows subkey...... You really dont need to take ownership of the key. 0 LVL
