I've attempted to make changes to the startup programs using MSCONFIG and got: "An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service access. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified changes." I have a Dell with Win XP Media Center Edition, SP3. I've search a bit and know that I don't have the HP printer issue. When I searched for the msconfig.exe file - I've attached a screen shot - well, I just think it's strange but have no idea what I'm looking at. So, it could be fine. I just wanted to mention it. I hope you can help. Thanks in advance. Thread Status: Not open for further replies. Page 1 of 2 1 2 Next > Advertisement snailshell Thread Starter Joined: May 20, 2006 Messages: 31 Hi, I just recently tried making changes to the startup using msconfig to try to fix a different problem, and in doing so, came across another. Whenever I try to make a change http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/384549/msconfig-access-denied-error-was-returned/ to the startup, I get a "an access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified changes". However, I am the administrator when I'm making these changes. The last time I used msconfig was about a year ago, and it worked fine. What's going on? I tried searching for answers, https://forums.techguy.org/threads/msconfig-an-access-denied-error-need-to-be-administrator.524119/ but couldn't find any that would help me snailshell, Dec 5, 2006 #1 Sponsor wr4698er73678 Banned Joined: Nov 25, 2006 Messages: 308 What service are you attempting to change? wr4698er73678, Dec 5, 2006 #2 snailshell Thread Starter Joined: May 20, 2006 Messages: 31 I was trying to disable the HP Solution Center from starting up following a recommendation to "fix" a bug w/ the solution center snailshell, Dec 6, 2006 #3 Joanyoung Joined: Jun 18, 2004 Messages: 1,122 Do you have Zone Alarm installed? try turning it off and then run msconfig joan Joanyoung, Dec 6, 2006 #4 snailshell Thread Starter Joined: May 20, 2006 Messages: 31 No, I do not have Zone Alarm; here is what I have Windows XP Home SP2 Windows Defender Ad-Aware SE Norton Systemworks w/ AV 2005 Norton Personal Firewall 2005 I have run a full system AV scan, Windows Defender Quick Scan, and Ad-Aware full scan just a few days ago and found nothing. snailshell, Dec 7, 2006 #5 wr4698er73678 Banned Joined: Nov 25, 2006 Messages: 308 can you please go through the procdeure that you are taking to disable this service wr4698er73

THANKSClick to expand... Your friend's computer doesn't happen to have an HP printer installed does it? If so then see this, How to Fix Access Denied Error in MSCONFIG. My father had the same problem on his computer. He could run msconfig but when he changed items in the startup list it would give him the error about needing to be an admin even though he was an admin already. However, it would go ahead and make the changes he had set. The popup was really just an annoyance and didn't really affect anything. The only thing we could find after some research that his PC had in common with other people having the same problem was the HP printer driver issue. Be advised that he did not institute the fix given on the link I gave you which involves editing the registry, so do some more research and use it at your own risk. He basically just decided that no more often than he runs msconfig he could tolerate the popup.
