Msconfig Help Administrator Error
disable a program from starting up by using the MSCONFIG - System Configuration Utility, I received an error stating: "An Access Denied error was returned while attempting an access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administratoraccount to msconfig access denied administrator account make the specified changes" Unfortunately, this error happens even using an account with Administrator priviledges, and the error doesn't give enough information to let you know which service is causing the problem. After an hour or more of trial and error, I traced the problem to an update for his HP printer software. The HP software loads a service called PML Driver HPZ12 into the Services section that loads automatically. This service is used by many HP printers including the HP PSC 2100, 2200, 4100, and 6100 series of All-in-One printers, the Deskjet 6600 and 6800 series, the PhotoSmart series, and All-in-One OfficeJet printers. Trying to disable this service in Computer Management, however, was not the answer. It would not allow me to change the Startup type from Automatic to either Manual or Disabled. It appears the PML Driver HPZ12 service handles non-printing related two-way communications between the PC and the HP printer. These tasks would include things like low ink level information, and on All-in-One HP devices it would include scanning options and such between the printer and the computer. So, although you probably don't want to disable it, setting it to manual would solve the MSCONFIG error and still allow you to scan and accomplish other tasks with the printer. Now, however, is the tricky part...HOW to set the service to disabled, manual, or automatic. It seems HP has decided that the only way you can change the properties or Startup Type of the PML Driver HPZ12 service is by editing the registry. So, follow the steps below to change this service if you want, however be carefully when editing the registry. Click on Start, Run Type REGEDIT and Press Enter or Click OK Click on the Pluses (+) next to the following items in the left column of the Registry Editor HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE System CurrentControlSet Services PML Driver HPZ12 In the right-hand column find the key named Start

By mikedeewithadt · 8 years ago I have looked for a few hours for the last couple days for an answer to this question:I am the Administrator on my computer. It is on a small home network with 1 other computer with an Intellinet Wired Router. I am running Win XP SP2. If more specs are required please ask. But anyways, when I try to use MSCONFIG.EXE or a program called AutoRuns(which is http://www.techrepublic.com/forums/discussions/msconfigexe-not-allowing-me-to-save-change-i-am-admin/ basically an easier to understand msconfig) any changes I make revert upon reboot and my selection of normal startup from the general? tab of msconfig. I get an error message to the extent of "an access error has occured logon as administrator or go to your admin" or something to that effect.I'm lost! Please help. Thanks in advanceMike Share Flag This conversation is currently closed to new comments. 26 total posts (Page 1 of 3) 01 | 02 | 03 Next + Follow this Discussion · | Thread display: Collapse - | Expand + All Answers Collapse - Temporarily disable UAC by Jacky Howe · 8 years ago In reply to MSCONFIG.EXE not allowing ... Whenever I try to make a change to the startup, I get a "an access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log access denied on using an Administrator account to make the specified changes". However, I am the administrator when I'm making these changes. The last time I used msconfig was about a year ago, and it worked fine. What's going on? I tried searching for answers, but couldn't find any that would help me snailshell, Dec 5, 2006 #1 Sponsor wr4698er73678 Banned Joined: Nov 25, 2006 Messages: 308 What service are you attempting to change? wr4698er73678, Dec msconfig help administrator 5, 2006 #2 snailshell Thread Starter Joined: May 20, 2006 Messages: 31 I was trying to disable the HP Solution Center from starting up following a recommendation to "fix" a bug w/ the solution center snailshell, Dec 6, 2006 #3 Joanyoung Joined: Jun 18, 2004 Messages: 1,122 Do you have Zone Alarm installed? try turning it off and then run msconfig joan Joanyoung, Dec 6, 2006 #4 snailshell Thread Starter Joined: May 20, 2006 Messages: 31 No, I do not have Zone Alarm; here is what I have Windows XP Home SP2 Windows Defender Ad-Aware SE Norton Systemworks w/ AV 2005 Norton Personal Firewall 2005 I have run a full system AV scan, Windows Defender Quick Scan, and Ad-Aware full scan just a few days ago and found nothing. snailshell, Dec 7, 2006 #5 wr4698er73678 Banned Joined: Nov 25, 2006 Messages: 308 can you please go through the procdeure that you are taking to disable this service wr4698er73678, Dec 7, 2006 #6 snailshell Thread Starter Joined: May 20, 2006 Messages: 31 Login under admin account -> Start -> Run ->msconfig -> Startup Tab -> Uncheck "HPWuSch2" -> OK -> "Access Denied Error" -> OK -> Exit with Restart snailshell, Dec 11, 2006 #7 wr4698er73678 Banned Joined: Nov 25, 2006 Messages: 308 Tried disabling a different service to make sure that its not the HP serv
