I've seen 5.1 behave oddly about this. –Poodlehat Jun 27 '12 at 14:27 1 This happened to me while installing Magento and I made a much sillier mistake. Putting 'mysql -u magento -p magento' was prompting me for a password and instead of the default password I was putting the root password in. –AmirHd Oct 29 '13 at 3:26 | show 4 more comments 26 Answers 26 active oldest votes up vote 282 down vote accepted You probably have an anonymous user ''@'localhost' or ''@'127.0.0.1'. As per the manual: When multiple matches are possible, the server must determine which of them to use. It resolves this issue as follows: (...) Am I missing something? I have tried running it as root, and running it https://www.digitalocean.com/community/questions/setup-mysql-on-ubuntu-droplet-getting-error-error-1045-28000-access-denied-for-user-root-localhost-using-password-yes with sudo through another user and cannot get around it. If I offer no password it gives the same error but instead of using password: YES, it's NO. Thanks. 3 comments 0 mikionline20 January 19, 2016 I faced like this error while i want check my database ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'user02'@'localhost' (using password: NO) do you have solution about this 0 CrypticDesigns January 19, 2016 Same solution, just login as root and then change password of the user: update user set password=PASSWORD("YOURPASSWORDHERE") where User='user02'; 0 sergeyvlasov July 3, 2016 Experienced the same problem. You can check the configuration files probably and find the password. If you can't find it, neither root without pass is working you can reset it: Commands sudo /etc/init.d/mysql stop Now start up MySQL in safe mode, so you'll skip the privileges table: sudo mysqld_safe --skip-grant-tables & Login with root: mysql -uroot And assign the DB that needs to be used: use

Now that therapeutic explanation is done, I have installed MySql Server and MariaDb 10 from the Ubuntu repositories on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and input the root password when it is installing[When the pink screen appears and prompts for the root password] and the installation goes through as smoothly as a knife through butter. Now the real frustration begins in either of the below 2 scenarios: When I enter the sudo /usr/bin/mysql_secure_installation command nd am prompted to enter the root password or 2.When I enter the mysql -u root -p command and am prompted for the password. Please I really need help on this - I have lost count of the number of times I have had to uninstall and reinstall either MySQL or MariaDb because this pain in neck erf an error. server permissions password mysql root share|improve this question asked Apr 16 '14 at 6:39 chetwynd2014 26115 Hi Jobin, I have tried the first command:mysqladmin -u root -pcurrentpassword password 'newpassw
