So I used diskpart.exe, but when I tried to shrink my partition, I got access denied again! Unmovable files such as the page file, etc, usually prevent you shrinking the partition down to the size you actually want anyway. A way around this is to use a free tool called GParted. Download, burn to a CD and boot into it. You will get a familiar interface which will allow you to play with your partitions. As it runs outside Windows, there no Access Denied errors and nothing stopping the unmovable files from being moved. share|improve this answer answered Sep 13 '09 at 14:48 Kez 12.8k85384 add a comment| up vote 0 down vote You can use GParted or Paragon Partition Manager Express to resize partitions. The How-To Geek Forums Have Migrated to Discourse How-To Geek Forums / Windows Vista (Solved) - Vista Partition Manager: Access Denied Error (30 posts) Started 7 years ago by Jobz Latest reply from smeher http://www.howtogeek.com/forum/topic/vista-partition-manager-access-denied-error Topic Viewed 18062 times 1 2 Next » Jobz Posts: 71 This post has been reported. Hey guys, for the past few days I've been trying to shrink my Vista partition to dual boot with Ubuntu, but I've run into nothing but problems. At first it wouldn't let me shrink it more than 400MB, but after going through the article here about working around the issues with the partition manager and disabling everything listed there, access is I was able to get it to let me shrink up to about 100GB. So that was one problem solved, unfortunately when I actually tried to shrink it (I was trying to shrink it by about 30GB) I was greeted with an 'Access Denied' error message. So I tried several methods on this site and from elsewhere on the web, but nothing seemed to work. Eventually I ran Diskperfect in the "Consolidate Free Space" mode, and access is denied I tried shrinking again. I was able to shrink the partition by 5GB. After that I tried shrinking another 25GB to get the size I had wanted, but once again I got the Access Denied error. I tried 5GB again just to see if perhaps I had to do it in small amounts, and it did work a second time (Giving me a total of 10GB of unallocated space) but upon trying it a third time I was once again greeted with the same error. I've tried running Diskperfect again twice and I continue to get the same error. Needless to say this has been quite frustrating. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. -Jobz Reports: · Posted 7 years ago Top madmacs Posts: 1438 This post has been reported. Hi Jobz, welcome to HTG. Have you tried right clicking the cmd and running as administrator? Matt Reports: · Posted 7 years ago Top Jobz Posts: 71 This post has been reported. Thanks for the quick reply Matt, as of right now I haven't been using cmd for anything. I've been using Vista's partition manager in the disk management window. Should I be using the cmd instead?
