I have an alienware m11x laptop that I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 onto, but after a week or so of use it seems that GRUB has disappeared. I get an error message on start up (before any os loads) saying "no module name found. Aborted. Press any key to exit. Operating System not found". I had a dual boot of 7 and ubuntu. Ive tried installing super grub 2 and also running from a live CD but neither work. (mind you i have to use an external optical drive if this makes any difference). I cant seem to get any bootloaders to work at all. Anyone have a clue as to whats causing this? Could it be a hardware problem? At least not until it's confirmed there is no way to repair with ubuntu. Boot again in live mode with the cd and follow the link in my signature to run the boot info script. Post the results as explained there. That should show more details about the system. Darko. ----

My insmod was set to ldm and the set root was set to /ldm/(lotofhexnumbers)/volume1. So I edit these two lines and press Ctrl+X this will boot but will not save this is just for testing. insmod part_msdos set root='(hd0,msdos1)' If it works for you, boot back in to Ubuntu sudo gedit /boot/grub/grub.cfg.

After that, I could no longer boot from the sdd drive, I always get the "Operation System not found" error. I tried recovering grub following this instructions http://howtoubuntu.org/how-to-repair-restore-reinstall-grub-2-with-a-ubuntu-live-cd I also tried reinstalling from freya and 15.04 live usb, with no luck I'm about to completely wipe the whole ssd drive, but first I'd like to know if there's anything else I could try. From the live usb, everything seems to work fine, I can see the partitions and update them with gparted, I install the OS and everything installs with no error. Any idea? grub2 partitioning system-installation 15.04 share|improve this question asked Jun 28 '15 at 17:48 opensas 76431326 what happened when you tried repairing from the live disk? –mchid Jun 28 '15 at 17:52 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 3 down
