Java Error Cannot Find Symbol Arraylist
(Rookie mistake, I'm sure.) I'm a first year computer science student, and attempting to write a program for an assignment, with the code; import java.util.Scanner; public class Lab10Ex1 { public static void main(String[] arg) { Scanner keyboard = new Scanner(System.in); System.out.println("Please type a number: "); int n = keyboard.nextInt(); calcNumFactors(); } public static void calcNumFactors(){ System.out.print(n + 1); } } But upon compiling, I get the error; Lab10Ex1.java:10: error: java error cannot find symbol file cannot find symbol System.out.print(n + 1); ^ symbol: variable n location: class Lab10Ex1 If someone could explain to me what I've done wrong, or how to fix it, I would greatly appreciate it. java variables symbols share|improve this question edited Nov 22 '13 at 5:30 Hanky Panky 36.9k83264 asked Nov 22 '13 at 5:21 Skelatox 16113 Just as a tip; keep your code formatting consistent and readable. It'll save a lot of headaches in future assignments and future classes. –Dennis Meng Nov 22 '13 at 5:25 Ah. As I said, I'm new to the site, and new to Java. My apologies. It's probably not helping that it's 1:30 in the morning. –Skelatox Nov 22 '13 at 5:28 Yeah, coding into the night is never fun (I did it constantly in college). The formatting bit is almost all for your benefit; it's an absolutely critical skill since you will have to work in a team eventually (and the other people have to be able to read your code). From a Stack Overflow perspective, it'll also help you get help much faster (we can't help you if we can't read the code :P) –Dennis Meng Nov 22 '13 at 5:32

cannot find symbol "Cannot find symbol" http://stackoverflow.com/questions/20137581/java-error-cannot-find-symbol errors generally occur when you try to reference an undeclared variable in your code. Consider the following example: public class Test { public static void main(String[] args) { int a = 3; int b = 4; int c = 20; average = (a + b + c)/5.0; System.out.println(average); } } 1 error found: File: Test.java http://cs-people.bu.edu/dgs/courses/cs111-old/assignments/errors.html [line: 7] Error: Test.java:7: cannot find symbol symbol : variable average location: class Test Here, the variable average has not been declared-- you need to tell the compiler what the type of average is; for example: double average = (a + b + c)/5.0; Secondly, sometimes this error occurs because you are trying to reference a method in your code, but forget to include the parentheses that indicate a reference to a method, even when there are no parameters. For example: public class Test { public static void main(String[] args) { my_method; } public static void my_method() { System.out.println("Hello, world!"); } } 1 error found: File: Test.java [line: 7] Error: Test.java:7: cannot find symbol symbol : variable my_method location: class Test Here, the compiler is looking for a variable called my_method in the main method; instead, you want to initiate a method call to my_method: public class Test { public static void main(String[] args) { my_method(); } public static void my_method() { System.out.prcannot find symbol variable : null I cant find the error. https://teamtreehouse.com/community/java-cannot-find-symbol-variable-null Please help out. error is coming in line : if(count==NULL) in the end in Blog.java class com/example/BlogPost.java package com.example; import java.io.Serializable; import java.util.ArrayList; import http://www.skylit.com/javamethods-old/JM-Appendix-B.html java.util.Date; import java.util.List; public class BlogPost implements Comparable
