The deployment image did not have Office included since we run a mix of 2003 and 2007 here currently. So the Office installation is even more fresh. Despite this, I ran into a really weird bug. Anytime I tried to open Excel files by using Explorer file association (ie, double clicking on the target file, instead of using File->Open menu

within Excel), I would get the following error... My first thought is permissions. I double checked. They were correct. Okay what's the problem? I opened the file from WITHIN Excel. It worked! Very strange. I searched the google on the internets and found this post. Apparently, there's an advanced setting in Excel that can interfere with file association opening. Very odd. Click on the office "pearl" (the circle button in the upper-left corner of Excel), then click on "Excel Options." From there, click on "Advanced," scroll down to "General," and uncheck "Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)." (March 21, 2008 - Thanks to Shrivmather, in the comments below, for pointing out a mistake in the preceding paragraph. It has been corrected.) I'm not sure I understand entirely why this setting prevents files from opening by association, throwing a "File Not Found" error. Maybe somebody can explain this to me? Well, the solution works, so mystery solved here... I have a user who has Office 2007. Her Excel will not open .xls files when she doubleclicks on excel cannot find file them, be it on the desktop, in a folder or from outlook mail messages. However, when she maps to it with File >>> Open >>> dig down to file >>> x.Xls, then https://www.avianwaves.com/Blog/entryid/62/Excel-2007-Windows-Cannot-Find-lt-filename-gt-but-you-KNOW-the-file-exists.aspx the file opens. What is causing the doubleclick not to work, and what can I do about it so it does? Thursday, June 17, 2010 5:04 PM Reply | Quote All replies 0 Sign in to vote Hi, We can change the file association of the Excel file. Please right-click the Excel file and choose Properties. Click the Change button and choose Microsoft https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/1d938fac-be7e-4a08-9acd-3a98658c3bf8/excel-2007-will-not-open-xls-from-a-doubleclick-only-fileopen?forum=officesetupdeploylegacy Office Excel. Also check the box before: Always use the selected program to open this kind of file. If the problem persists, try the methods below to resolve the issue: Method 1: Enable the Ignore Other Applications that use DDE feature =================== 1. Click the Office button an then click Excel Options. Excel displays the Excel Options dialog box. 2. Click Advanced at the left side of the dialog box. 3. In the General section, make sure the Ignore Other Applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) check box is selected. 4. Click on OK. If you still cannot double-click on a workbook to open it, try these steps: Method 2: ================= 1. Close Excel completely. 2. Open a My Computer window. 3. Choose Tool | Folder Options. You should see the Folder Options dialog box. Note: If you are Windows Vista, click Start > Search, type Folder Options and search it. 4. Make sure the File Types tab is displayed. (Note: This option is not available in Windows 7.) 5. In the list of registered file types, find and select the entry for XLS (Microso
this post. It took some time to find a fix and my hope that this post will help http://www.naffziger.net/blog/2007/12/17/fix-error-when-double-clicking-an-excel-file-windows-cannot-find-the-file/ others in the future. Somehow my Excel installation got into a funky state where I had problems opening files from anywhere but inside Excel. Firefox gave me this error http://www.techrepublic.com/forums/discussions/unable-to-open-excel-files-directly-by-clicking-on-the-file-icon/ message when I tried to open an excel file off an Excel link: associated helper application does not exist Windows explorer gave me this error message when I doubleclicked cannot find the file from anywhere (desktop, windows explorer, etc.): Windows cannot find ‘path\file' In both of these cases, Excel would open but no file would load. It took a bit of digging, but this blog post put me on to the solution - I had to unregister and regregister Excel. The original post was originally written for Excel cannot find file 2003. If you're running 2008, here are the steps you need to follow: In Excel, click the Microsoft Office Button (in the top left), click Excel Options (at the bottom of the menu box on the right), click the Advanced category, and then under the General section, clear the Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) check box. In Windows, open a command prompt: Start > Run will get you the run dialog box. Then enter "cmd" Navigate to the directory of your Excel installation. On my machine that is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12 Enter this command: excel.exe /unregserver then enter this command: excel.exe /regserver I would expect that a similar fix would work if Word, Powerpoint or other Office programs end up in a similar state.
