Typeerror Cannot Read Property 'parentnode' Of Null Datatables
it only takes a minute: Sign up how can I fix the error: this.parentNode is null? up vote 0 down vote favorite I'm developing an app where you can display all monuments and places to be in Ghent (Belgium). There's a fullscreen map on the homepage (programmed in jQuery with Google Maps API v3) and on the lefthand side, uncaught typeerror: cannot read property 'parentnode' of null there's a list of the items that you can display. Users can choose whether they want the category to be displayed alone, or to be added to the categories that they clicked before. This is what happens: I load the page, I click a category. Everything works fine. But only if I click spans in the same category. Whenever I click something in another category, firebug throws the error: parent is null (or this.parentNode is null) I initially tried to do it in jQuery with $(this).parent().html()..., but it gives me a similar error: 'TypeError: parent.html(...) is undefined'. Here's my code... I have compared my code to my co-workers and it is almost identical. I have made the necessary changes, but I keep getting the JavaScript error: "Cannot read property 'parentNode' of null" in the console. All of the code is executing perfectly. The new table is being displayed in the browser, but once it tries to run the line $('#data').dataTable({"paging": false}); it gives me the error. Can anyone see what is causing this? Maybe a scope error, or a parentheses/bracket in wrong spot. function Load(p1, p2) { var work= ""; $('#div1').empty(); var tablearea = document.getElementById('div1'), table = document.createElement('table'); table.id = "data"; table.style.fontSize = "small"; table.width = "100%"; var tbody = document.createElement('tbody'); tbody.id = "dataTB"; table.appendChild(tbody); tablearea.appendChild(table); var url = sessionStorage.baseUrl + "XXXXXXXXX"; $.getJSON(url) .done(function (data) { var results = $.parseJSON(data); if (results != null) { for (i = 0; i < results.length; i++) { work += "Transport

I'm using a modified version of the angular-ui bootstrap datepicker that uses ng-if to only render the control if it is open, and so I'm reasonably certain the analysis by @caitp in that issue is exactly the problem for me. If I add the following at line 1201 in angular-animate.js after the call to extractElementNode(), the error message goes away: if (!elementNode) { done(); cannot read property return; } There's also a comment by @matsko there about refactoring some code into animationsDisabled() after #8092 is fixed, which it now is, so I'm not sure if there's some more work to be done in that area. I have not noticed any consequences to this, since presumably we can't do much to animate a DOM element that isn't there... Angular member matsko commented Nov 24, 2014 @hamfastgamgee any chance you have a plunkr handy? The issue is more so the recreation of the bug by creating a test. hamfastgamgee commented Nov 24, 2014 I'm having a very hard time finding a reduced test case for it. The circumstances seem to be that an animation gets queued up somehow, the element is removed by the ng-if, and then the promise fires and the element is gone, so calling .parentNode fails. If I can find a reproducible test case, I will happily post it. The app I'm hitting it in is gigantic, so finding just a small chunk to extract without running afoul of legal is proving problematic. :) Basically, we're wrapping the Angular-UI Datepicker in another directive that basically exists to add a label to the field, etc. pkozlowski-opensource added component: ngAnim
