Before you proceed to this step, you should have already set up the database in MySQL. You need to create a user and grant access privileges to that user. Then check your MySQL server configuration. The default port number is 3306. However, your system admin might change it to something else. Or if you are using software packages such as MAMP/WAMP, the port number may be set to something other than 3306. In these cases, you need to explicitly put the port number in the Host field. If all these are correct and you still have database connection error, you can try to use root account to access the database. If root works out, that means there are problems with the privileges in your MySQL settings. Thought it is not recommended to use root account for future production deployment as it adds security risks to the server. share|impro

For those who aren't reading the details of this post and skipping straight to the http://jeffmoser.com/blog/2013/09/02/magento-installation-database-connection-error/ code, please at least read this: This problem only applies to those running mySql http://leaditsoftware.com/blog/magento-installation-database-connection-error/ 5.6 or later with Magento 1.8 or earlier. There are several triggers in the install code that can prevent installation. This is just one of them that I encountered. The Magento team have fixed this for the Magento 2 release. If you still need to fix something broken, consider hiring me or look database connection for more Magento help here Update: Nov 7, 2013 - I just received an email indicating that the fix to this issue is in review. Installing Magento has been an uphill battle. Even the simple things are a pain. When installing most applications that have file permission requirements, you get a list of what needs to be changed. Magento doles them out two at a database connection error time. It's not a big deal, I guess. It just feels like more roadblocks during installation. But there are bigger issues than that. Installation halts for me with the message, "Database server does not support the InnoDB storage engine." Now…I know that my db server is using InnoDB. I installed it myself, and set InnoDB as default. And when I run the query ‘show variables;' it's there: ‘storage_engine => InnoDB.' But that's not what the Magento install script is looking for. When I dug around into the installation files, I found that the Magento code is checking for the ‘have_innodb' value. If you're running an older version of MySQL, this isn't an issue. But as of version 5.6, the ‘have_innodb' value is deprecated. That version was released two years ago! What's even more irritating is that someone submitted a solution to this issue to the Magento GitHub six months ago. Even an exhaustive review of this code and a merge into the distribution would only take an hour or so. It's a no-brainer. But, I suppose, when your Enterprise version runs north of $15K yearly, there's not as much emphasis put on the community edition. I understand that
by Nikola Stojiljkovic in Backend, Bugs, Database, Magento 7 If you are trying to install older versions of Magento on MySQL 5.6.x you are most likely getting either "Database connection error" or "Database server does not support the InnoDB storage engine." (depends on the version of Magento). This short post is about why this is happening and how you can fix it. The error is happening because MySQL system variable "have_innodb" has been deprecated in version 5.6.1. Here's the link to the official documentation: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.6/en/server-system-variables.html#sysvar_have_innodb. If you take a look at /app/code/core/Mage/Install/Model/Installer/Db.php you will notice that there is an "if" statement to check if your system has InnoDB engine supported. For example, in Magento CE 1.5.0.1 it looks like this: // check InnoDB support if (!isset($variables['have_innodb']) || $variables['have_innodb'] != 'YES') { Mage::throwException(Mage::helper('install')->__('Database server does not support the InnoDB storage engine.')); …and in Magento 1.7.0.2 it's something like this: // check InnoDB support if (!$resource->supportEngine()) { Mage::throwException( Mage::helper('install')->__('Database server does not support the InnoDB storage engine.') ); } To resolve the issue, you can comment out this "if" statement and proceed with installation. Once the installation is complete revert the changes you have made to the file. (Besause there is a special place in hell for those who modify Magento's core files. ) Update If you still have issues, try the following. Open app/code/core/Mage/Install/etc/config.xml and search for line
