Today, we came across a similar error message and discovered there is a limitation for Excel files of 218 characters – this is the path length limitation whether it's a URL or a file share path. If you try to open an Excel file with more than 218 characters in a dde error the path and filename, you receive the following error: A DDE error has occurred, and a description of the error cannot be displayed because it is too long. If the filename or path is long, try renaming the file or copying it to a different folder. The Microsoft article for this issue is here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/271513.
