If http://superuser.com/questions/786974/after-ignoring-dde-function-cannot-open-separate-instances-of-excel you try to open a file with a URL that is too long, you get the following error message: The URL for this file is too long for the application. A temporary copy of this file will be opened on your computer. You must save this copy as dde error a new file. Today, we came across a similar error message and discovered there is a limitation for Excel files of 218 characters – this is the path length limitation whether it's a URL or a file share path. If you try to open an Excel file with more than 218 characters in the path and filename, you receive the dde error adobe following error: A DDE error has occurred, and a description of the error cannot be displayed because it is too long. If the filename or path is long, try renaming the file or copying it to a different folder. The Microsoft article for this issue is here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/271513. The solution is to shorten the file path or URL by storing files at the top level (rather than "nesting" files under several folder levels). [duplicate] I looked up a method of opening multiple files in separate instances of MS Excel, as I have both a landscape oriented and portrait oriented monitor and need to use both. The common method of doing so was to enable a function called "Ignore other applications that implement DDE (dynamic data exchange)" or similar. Now that I have applied this option, whenever I open files in Excel, I receive the error; There was a problem sending the command to the program. Microsoft and other sources list the resolution as "Disable the DDE ignore function". This will place me right back where I started. Is there a method of opening each file in a separate instance of the Office program, without making Office prone to this error? microsoft-excel microsoft-office dde share|improve this question edited Jul 29 '14 at 4:10 random♦ 10.5k83954 asked Jul 23 '14 at 15:22 Wolfish 1116 marked as duplicate by Ƭᴇcʜιᴇ007, dav, Kevin Panko, digitxp, random♦ Jul 29 '14 at 4:07 This question was marked as an
