error in MOSS 2007 site A DDE error has occurred, and a description of the error cannot be displayed because it is too long. If the filename or path is long, try renaming the file or copying it to a different folder. I have checked and the path has less than 200 characters. Please help. Monday, March 18, 2013 5:48 PM Reply | Quote Answers 0 Sign in to vote This issue is only occured due to dde error bmw document path lenght only. please verify it again. The total length of the path and the file name, including file name extension and also encoded lenght, all should not be more than Microsoft Word: The total length of the path and the file name, including file name extension, exceeds 259 characters. Microsoft PowerPoint: The total length of the path and the file name, including file name extension, exceeds 259 characters. Microsoft Access: The total length of the path and the file name, including file name extension exceeds 259 characters. Microsoft Excel: The total length of the path and the file name, including file name extension, exceeds 218 characters. To fix this Rename the file so that it has a shorter name.Rename one or more folders that contain the file so that they have shorter names.Move the file to a folder that has a shorter path name. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325573 Marked as answer by Emir LiuMicrosoft contingent staff Friday, March 29, 2013 5:17 AM Monday, March 18, 2013 7:58 PM Reply | Quote Microsoft is conducting an online survey to understand your opinion of the Msdn Web site. to open a file with a URL that is too long, you get the following error message: The excel file name too long to open URL for this file is too long for the application. A temporary copy of this file will be opened on your computer. You must save this copy as a new file. https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/3adfaedb-69c8-418b-833c-cacefaf39a30/a-dde-error-has-occurred-and-a-description-of-the-error-cannot-be-displayed-because-it-is-too-long?forum=appsforsharepoint Today, we came across a similar error message and discovered there is a limitation for Excel files of 218 characters – this is the path length limitation whether it's a URL or a file share path. If you try to open an Excel file with more than 218 characters in the path and filename, you receive the following error: A DDE http://blogs.catapultsystems.com/mpoole/archive/2010/11/16/url-length-limitation-218-characters-for-excel-files/ error has occurred, and a description of the error cannot be displayed because it is too long. If the filename or path is long, try renaming the file or copying it to a different folder. The Microsoft article for this issue is here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/271513. The solution is to shorten the file path or URL by storing files at the top level (rather than "nesting" files under several folder levels). 2016 by Nelson I just helped someone that was having this problem in Excel when opening multiple spreadsheets from the network. this is the error she https://ittutorials.net/microsoft/office-2010/a-dde-error-has-occurred-and-a-description-of-the-error-cannot-be-displayed-excel/ was getting: the problem is that she had created some shortcuts to the network http://www.wipfli.com/BlogPost_MCRM_blog_04_05_12.aspx drives, and thus increasing the length of the path to such files. according to Microsoft only 218 characters are allowed on file path lengths ( that includes that path and the file name, this seems primitive to me ) and that's why such error is displayed. the solution is to use a network drive dde error ( if you have the permissions to create one ) to shorten the path to the files so the file path length is shorter than the 218 characters Microsoft allows. I hope that help someone. Related This tutorial was posted in Office 2010.
