Cause The modem is unable to establish a dial up connection due to certain conditions. Resolution Is there a modem handshake sound? If not the telephone access number is probably wrong in some way. Meaning that the modem itself is not responding properly to Windows. The only thing you can really do here is "reset" your modem. And the best way to do that is to turn it off for about 3 minutes. It is often said that it takes 200 seconds for all the static electricity to dry up in the motherboard of the average computer. So the 3 minute rule applies here. Turn the machine off for 3 minutes, and then try again. If it continues happening, the modem may be in trouble. Errors 650 through 699 Error 650 - Generally a sign that Dial-Up Networking (DuN for short) in Windows is NOT working right. The main fix here is a Re-installation of Dial-Up Networking in Windows. DuN is a bunch of applications and detail files that Windows uses to make the connection with the modem, and then the Internet. Error 676/678 - Generally means that the computer is not talking to the modem. These are often bad and tend to indicate a modem driver issue, although often, the modem maybe done for. If a modem fails, this error will come up. Error 680 - Your pet has been playing with that phone line! Yep! The "No Dial Tone" error could be that the phone cord to the modem is unplugged, or damaged. The other option is that the modem did not disconnect properly that last time you went online. Rebooting the computer will often solve the problem in that case. Error 691 - Authentication issue. The connection is working, but you can not get logged in. This is a Username/Password issue 9 out of 10 times. The last one of these could deal with your account and its status.
