I received the Hard Drive Failure error message 311 that tells me to unplug the receiver for 10 seconds and plug it back in to see if the error would go away. It doesn't and there went my recordings of the Bejing Olympics and a Jonas Brothers movie (not mine, lol) amongst other things. I can only watch things live on this IRD. Assuming that this will have to be replaced - does anyone know if a replacement requires an on-site visit by a tech? I'd hate to have to take a day off work for this. Also, perhaps I will look into seeing if upgrading to the 922 would be worth it.. Actually - this comes at a time where I'm weighing my options on what to do since it seems that NY regional sports cha

I tried rebooting with the plug/unplug method-no help. Any dish network suggestions? Submitted: 7 years ago. Category:Consumer Electronics Share this conversation Expert: Louie replied7 years ago. Hi and welcome to JustAnswer,To my understanding, the error message '311' indicates a hard drive failure. On power-up, the built-in diagnostics checks the components of the Dish Network ViP722 HD DVR. If it senses a failed component, system would halt and display an error message with the numbers corresponding to the part that has failed its check. The unit has a large dish network error internal hard drive that works as the storage media for storing HD programs recorded. Normal repair action calls for replacement of the hard drive.Alternately, there has been some reports of the unit being able to resurrect itself after being turned off for some time (unplug from the mains). Perhaps you may want to give that a try initially. Or press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds.Ultimately, just like in a computer, hard drives do fail.Hope that this be of initial help/idea. Good luck and thank you for using JustAnswer.Should the above have addressed your concern, it would be appreciated if you could take a moment to :click on the green ACCEPT THE ANSWER button as this is the only way my work gets acknowledged; rate/review by leaving a feedback as you see it fit. I also held down the power button for about 60 seconds (I thought that did a Hard Reset, but it didn't seem any different than a normal reset). I called the nice (clueless) lady at DISH and she wants to swap out the DVR. She asked me if I was near HDD capacity and I said that I was around 3 hours of HD space left. She tells me that running the DVR near capaity can corrupt the drive. I've been less than 5 Hrs a bunch of times, I never noticed any problems with the unit when it was near capacity. I assume I am screwed on the HDD and the 100s of kids shows I saved for my daughter. I guess I can live with that, not like I'm going to get the data back. I have one of the older 722 Receivers (not the "k"). The lady on the phone told me that they would replace it with the same unit. Then she told me depending on availability. Then she told me the same unit again. My TV does not have an onboard OTA HD receiver. What do you think DISH will send out? A Vip722, a 722k or a 722k with the OTA receiver? Is there any chance I can get them to upgrade me to the Vip922? I did pay somet
