Services Team Microsoft's official enterprise support blog for AD DS and more Troubleshooting ADPREP Errors ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★ December 15, 2008June 26, 2015 by NedPyle [MSFT] // 25 Comments 0 0 0 Hi all, Rob Newhouse again, and today I am talking about errors that you may see while running ADPREP. Normally I do not like to create a laundry list of errors, however I believe it should be beneficial and save you some time and (maybe) money by posting these common errors. This is a follow up to my previous post So You Want to Upgrade to Windows 2008 Domain Controllers (ADPREP). So you have run ADPREP and it has failed. The first thing that you need to do is open your C:\Windows\Debug\Adprep\Logs folder. There will be a separate file each time that you run ADPREP. At the bottom of the file, you will see what the problem is. Common failures include: Errors Running Adprep /Forestprep Adprep Was Unable to Extend the Schema Adprep was unable to extend the schema. 2008 (44) to 2008 R2 (47). The forest prep went flawless. We have 12 child domains, so I needed to run the adprep /domainprep /gpprep on each of the child domains. I ran through the first 11 without issue, but on the last one, I received http://andywolf.com/windows-server-2008-r2-adprep-domainprep-gpprep-error-0x5-access-denied/ the following error: Group policy upgrade failed. Adprep cannot extend your existing schema Adprep encountered a https://www.techwalla.com/articles/how-to-fix-a-win32-error Win32 error. Error code: 0×5 Error message: Access is denied… After looking at the log file under c:\windows\debug\adprep\logs, I noticed a particular GPO GUID that it was referencing when the access denied issue occurred. I looked up the guid under the DC\sysvol\policies and checked the permissions. I then looked up the GPO in the Group Policy Management console. When I looked at the delegation tab, I encountered a noticed that the domain admins for that particular domain was set to “Edit Settings” only. Right clicking the delegation option allowed me to change the setting to set “Modify Security”. I attempted the adprep /domainprep /gprep again, and it worked! This helped me pinpoint my problematic GPO and get my domain gp prepped for 2008. In my case it was a GPO that had been migrated from another domain and was missing domain admins completely from the ACL. Since the policy wasn't linked anywhere, I just removed it and problem solved. Andreas Koch View October 21, 2010 Thank you. I had the same problem. With your post you saved my day. When your computer gets a Win32 error, the application that the error occurred in ceases to work and you are unable to use the function on your computer. The error message for a Win32 error states that “Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close.” If you continually get the Win32 error on your system, a few tweaks can help eliminate the issue.Install UpdatesStep 1Install any updates that may be available for your Windows system. To find and install available updates, open the “Start” menu, click “All Programs” and select “Windows Update” from the menu. Click “Yes” to confirm the action if prompted.Step 2Select the “Check for updates” option in the left pane of the “Windows Update” window. Click “View available updates" and "Driver updates" for all of the devices that are installed on your computer. Updates will appear in list form.Step 3Click each driver update that you want to install on your Windows system and press the “Install” button. If prompted to confirm the action or enter the administrator password, do so and click “OK.” The updates to your device drivers are now installed on your system.Eliminate VirusesStep 1Run your antivirus software’s virus scan on your system. This is generally accomplished by opening the program and clicking a “Scan Now” or “Start Scan” button on the main screen. The virus scan finds and eliminates files that are affiliated with viruses that are on your system. If you do not have an antivirus software installed on your system, this is probably part of the issue and you should install one for continuous antivirus protection.Step 2Download and install a registry cleaner. Several are available to download for free at CNET.com.Step 3Run the registry cleaner on your system. Like virus scan software, registry cleaners are generally started by clicking one button on the main page. The registry cleaner finds and deletes any remaining files that have been left behind in the system’s registry by the antivirus software.Close the PortsStep 1Open the computer’s registry editor by going to the “Start” menu and clicking on the “Run” option.
