Has anyone had this issue before if so can you help with this https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/937932 issue. This setting affects the launching of 16-bit applications in the operating system. By default, the MS-DOS subsystem runs for all users on this computer. You can use this setting to turn off the MS-DOS subsystem, which will reduce resource usage and prevent users from running 16-bit applications. To run any 16-bit application or any application with 16-bit components, ntvdm.exe must be allowed to run. The MS-DOS subsystem starts when the first 16-bit application is launched. While the MS-DOS subsystem is running, any subsequent 16-bit applications launch faster, but overall resource usage on the system is increased. If the status is set to Enabled, ntvdm.exe is prevented from running, which then prevents any 16-bit applications from running. In addition, any 32-bit applications with 16-bit installers or other 16-bit components cannot run. If the status is set to Disabled, the default setting applies and the MS-DOS subsystem runs for all users on this computer. If the status is set to Not Configured, the default applies and ntvdm.exe runs for all users. However, if an administrator sets the registry DWORD value HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\WOW\DisallowedPolicyDefault to 1, the default changes to p
June 13, 2007 I ran across this one today when trying to run a 16-bit application on a Windows 2003 Server. I run the app and it pops http://www.expta.com/2007/06/ntvdm-encountered-hard-error.html up a Windows dialog box saying, "System Error : NTVDM encountered a hard http://www.techtalkz.com/windows-server-2003/39759-ntvdm-hard-error.html error."Turns out that the environment path for "TEMP" and "TMP" is invalid. Normally these paths resolve to their 8.3 pathname, so an enviromental variable set to %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp will resolve to C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp. On my problem server the path resolves to C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\Local Settings\Temp, note the space in Local Settings. This mix of long encountered a filenames and 8.3 names is invalid. To resolve the issue, I changed the user TEMP and TMP variables to use C:\TEMP. Error: "NTVDM has encountered a hard error" System Log: Event Type: Information Event Source: Application Popup Event ID: 26 Description: Application popup: ntvdm.exe - System Error : NTVDM encountered a hard error. I have read the KB937932 Article and while it is the same error it does not apply to printing. We are getting the error even when sysedit, command.com and other 16bit apps are run. When the popup occurs we are given the option of close and ignore, and when ignore is chosen the program continues normally. Last night I install SP2 for Windows 2003 and it did not fix the problem either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. -- NorthWeb Mike Sponsored Links « Previous Thread | Next Thread » Thread Tools Show Printable Version Email this Page Display Modes Linear Mode Switch to Hybrid Mode Switch to Threaded Mode Similar Threads Thread Thread Starter Forum Replies Last Post NTVDM encountered a hard error Adam Simmonds (SimAda00) Windows Server 2003 0 28-08-2007 04:51 AM ntvdm Hard Error NorthWeb Mike Windows Server 2003 0 28-08-2007 04:26 AM Re: NTVDM Hard Error on Server 2003 SP1 wanderlei.rosa Windows Server 2003 0 28-08-2007 03:27 AM Re: NTVDM Hard Error on Server 2003 SP1 wanderlei.rosa Windows Server 2003 0 28-08-2007 03:26 AM NTVDM and 16 bit applications.
