I got the error message when I first tried to play this game, so I downloaded Directx 9.0, and the error message persists. Help! User Info: Timohtep Timohtep - 8 years ago Clarification Request:: does it say something like "your hardware must support pixle shader 1.1? thats what it did for me, and there was noting i could do to fix it. it was my graphics card, it could only support up to DirectX 7.0 even though i had 9.0 on my computer User Info: SgManiac1255 SgManiac1255 - 8 years ago Top Voted Answer I've had the same problem. I solved it by going into Portal's shortcut properties and adding "-game portal -dxlevel 80 +mat_forcehardwaresync 0" (without quotes) in the target line field. Note that this will drastically tone down the graphics, and in some instances the game's environment could look very different (e.g. walls are purple, strange flickering, etc).I applied this fix when I had a 5-year-old laptop. Since then I upgraded to a much more powerful desktop. I suggest you do the same so no fixes would be required in order to achieve game operation.Best regards and good luck with the file alteration. You may also want to check to make sure your video driver is up-to-date. User Info: LurkinLeviathan LurkinLeviathan - 8 years

I think you need DX9 to be able to set shadow quality to high or to enable color correction. a mimimum requirement of DirectX 8.0 to run properly." I thought I might finally be able to play Portal... Reply To Topic RSS Reply! TheJorsh So yeah, I've had Portal for a while now, but never played it because I've been too busy to https://forum.starmen.net/forum/General/Tech/This-game-has-a-mimimum-requirement-of-DirectX-8-0-to-run-properly spend time playing something like that. This week's been alot less busy than usual, and today I didn't really have anything to do. I remembered how I've been accused of making references to the game a few times, even though I haven't even watched any youtube videos or talked to anyone about the game or anything, since I didn't feel like spoilers at the time. So I figured I'd take a few hours to play it, and engine error see what's so great about it. I started it up, watched a picture of the back of some guy's head with a valve coming out of it while some music played, the loading screen started, and then I was greeted by this message: This game has a mimimum requirement of DirectX 8.0 to run properly. "Oh well," I thought. "I'll just download the update real quick, and then I'll start playing." Ha ha, yeah right. I and I engine error directx already had DirectX 9 installed, and I went ahead and installed the update for 10, anyway. Guess what error popped up after the update? "This game has a mimimum requirement of DirectX 8.0 to run properly." I've been searching all day, and haven't found any fix. I've found plenty of places where other people are complaining about my same problem, but there hasn't been any "fix" posted anywhere that works. So would any of you happen to know what's wrong? Check out my Tumblr. I mod Game Boys and stuff. Posted over 6 years ago Quote Permalink Dylan May want to refer to this So either your graphics card is old or it doesn't support the correct Pixel Shader version to run the game Probably be easier to list the name of your graphics card so I can figure this out Posted over 6 years ago (edited over 6 years ago) Quote Permalink PrototypeNever has enough time to JHack I have to agree with Dylan on this. I used to have a video card that had impressive stats for the time, but no pixel shader. I always got some of the strangest errors when trying to push the limits.
