my personal workstation and the PANMS (Power Alert Network Management Software/System) only works for ONE DAY and then after that the poweralert local service bombs on reboot or does nothing at all. When I bring up the PANMS software, it just hangs. I have to CTRL+ALT+DELETE to kill the application. I've worked with APC, and their software, while buggy, actually works. This thing power alert software is horrible. There's always the chance that I'm a complete idiot and I'm missing something obvious, but how do I get the software to work consistently? let us know a little more... What TrippLite UPS are you using and how is it connected (serial/USB)? What OS is being used? How many machines share the same UPS? Are you using SNMP (PANMS uses SNMP extensively)? I have PANMS running on a Windows Server 2003 R2 system connected via USB to a TrippLite SU6000RT4U UPS. It is managing 4 other Windows servers as well, all powered by the same UPS. I also have the SMNP network card installed on the UPS to facilitate network communication more effectively. I had even installed the optional temp/humidity probe with it as well. All components in my case seem to work fine, but did take some time to work out the kinks. But I never did have a lockup yet (knock on wood.) From what I can tell from your post it may be that you have three UPS and three machines. In that configuration PANMS would not be needed, you could instead go stand alone and let each machine manage it's own power using regular PowerAlert. However, that's only preferable if you have a 1/1 ratio of machine to UPS. If you have 2/1 or more

Started by Guest Mark42, April 5, 2011 6 posts in this topic Guest Mark42 Guests Posted April 5, 2011 TrippLite makes a small UPS that I thought would be perfect for the server (INTERNET350U). It has a USB cable interface to the server and software to shut down the PC/Server when power is off. I even wrote Tripplite and asked if my specific chip set and configuration using whs PP3 would work with their product so the server would shut down gracefully. They said yes, it will work fine. So I bought the UPS, and find that the software needs Java installed. So I install Java run time environment successfully, then install the Tripplite PowerAlert monitoring software. The install was successful. When starting PowerAlert, there were java runtime errors. I could not get past the Java errors, and after uninstalling and re-installing java and PowerAlert, there were still errors running PowerAlert. So I gave up. Two days later I noticed that the server never seemed to go into standby or hibernation any more. Double checked the power settings, and they were still the same. I shut off all PC and internet devices and waited..... and waited.... and waited..... but the server would not go to standby. I uninstalled both PowerAlert and Java and sat back and waited for it to sleep.... and waited... and waited.... it would not go to standby. As a last resort, the server was shut down and restarted. Then it would go to standby, then hibernate as per the power option settings. I did notice that there is a tab in the Power Options folder for UPS settings. It is from APC. Now I am annoyed that I did not buy the APC UPS instead of the Tripplite. Anyway, just a "heads up" with a problem I had using Tripplite. I am going to get an APC UPS and hopefully, it will work as it should.
 Upgrade to a WGS Supporter Account to remove this ad.
