On startup, grub was started, but not with the normal menu, but just with a command line. When I tried to enter commands (which weren't http://superuser.com/questions/517251/grub-error-28-selected-item-cannot-fit-into-memory echoed), it gave me the error mentionned in the title. I then booted the PC with a resue USB stick tried to re-install grub, but that didn't help either. I give the solution in an answer below, but would like to know what was the real reason... grub share|improve this question asked Dec 10 '12 at 8:33 glglgl 1,157516 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 0 down vote The problem was that there were — among others — two files in my /boot/grub/: stage2 and stage2.old. The latter hat a file date of January 2012, while the former has been changed in the last days. I replaced stage2 with stage2.old and it worked again. Nevertheless, I would like to know if anybody else had this issue as well and maybe knows where this file change came from... share|improve this answer answered Dec 10 '12 at 8:34 glglgl 1,157516 I am also having the same problem, but the solution you posted is not working in my case. –Pratik Singhal - ps06756 Sep 30 '14 at 9:59 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draft discarded

I finally managed to install grub on the MBR of my first SCSI hard disk. (It didn't install during the regular fc6 test3 install -- see bug #207008.) Now when I try to boot linux, it gives me an error: Error 28: selected item cannot fit into memory I made a grub boot floppy with knoppix 5.0.1, and that *is* able to boot my system: I used the grub-floppy command in knoppix, then booted from the resulting floppy. Then in grub: configfile (hd1,0)/boot/grub.conf and I select the linux kernel and it boots without error 28. Comment 3 Greg Neely 2006-09-22 11:50:44 EDT I have experienced the same issue with the the following hardware configuration. supermicro X7DBE+ Rev 2.01 with 4 GIGS of Ram DDR II Buffered. 200Gig SATA Harddrive using on-board sata controller. Only 1 HD. Using 2 Dual Core Intel Xeon CPUs. I get the same exact issue. Tried going back to FC5 everything works except the NIC cards on the motherboard are not recognized during the installation. However the OS will load and reboot fine. Comment 4 Garrett Mitchener 2006-09-25 12:45:51 EDT I tried again with the new grub-0.97-12 and kernel-2.6.18-1.2689.fc6 packages, and grub
rayman Member Registered: 2010-09-09 Posts: 37 Grub error 28: selected item cannot fit into memory I installed arch, systemrescuecd, and trinity rescue kit on a usb stick. I used the mbr arch installed, grub 0.97, and edited the menu.lst to boot all os'es on the usb. SystemRescueCD provides an os with all kinds of "rescue" tools, but also other tools like GAG(gag.sourceforge.net/index.html), Memtest86, FreeDos etc, which can be booted from the bootloader. But, when I try to boot GAG, Memtest86, or FreeDos, grub gives me an error saying "error 28: selected item cannot fit into memory". According to grub, my lower memory is 630K, and my upper memory is about 3.4GiB. The GAG "kernel", is 24.7 kb, and the GAG initrd is 267.8 kb. This is not really arch related, I know, but still, if you can help me, I'd be very thankful. Google doesn't seem to help me on this one.
