had the Server service in the stopped state. When I tried to manually start the service I got an Access Denied error. A restart of the server didn't help. The Server service is critical because file sharing depends on it. If the service is stopped, shared folders and http://www.microsoftnow.com/2008/11/server-service-not-starting-denied.html administrative shares on the server cannot be accessed. This is especially critical on file servers, and https://forums.techguy.org/threads/solved-server-service-fails-and-cant-be-restarted.978692/ on domain controllers for replication/access to SYSVOL folder for group policies. The problem got resolved when I installed all the latest updates from Microsoft Update and restarted the machine. This is a security vulnerability listed in the security bulletin MS08-067 released by Microsoft this Sunday. I've been having this issue for a while now on an SBS2003 server. Windows' error 5 access firewall had crashed and let malware in, and at the same time the "Access denied" problem appeared on Server service. After removing all the malware manually running updates from Windows Update seems to have cured the problem. Reply Vikas Waghmare says: July 24, 2011 at 9:57 am I am having problem while starting a service. I have installed one application and it required one service to register. So I have registered the service successfully and started the service. First time it works perfectly fine. After couple of months I need to update the application and need to restart the service. In Service Console once i select the service and click on restart. It goes into starting state. It happens in Windows 2008 ServerR2 Datacenter Edition. "could not start the server service on local computer, error 5: access is denied". i have logged on as the administrator but still receive the same error. it is only after a reboot that the service is restored and the network shares are accessible again. this server is used to control and log poker machine activities, club member details and the paging system so rebooting 2 -3 times a day is causing chaos through the club. can anyone please help.. system specs: server 2003 r2 sp2 1 gb of ram 1 x intel Xeon cpu @ 3.2ghz ipconfig: Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : sxserver Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : SXDIGDOM.local Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : SXDIGDOM.local Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : HP NC7761 Gigabit Server Adapter Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-17-A4-8D-F1-5A DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.90 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : thanks.. albyschev, Feb 3, 2011 #1 Sponsor Rockn Joined: Jul 29, 2001 Messages: 21,335 Look in the server event logs for any red balls under system or application.
