I found
Error 0x00000005 Enumerating Sessionnames Error [5]:access Is Denied.
the solution here, in a comment made by Consoles. I reblog it so it can be found easier. It turns query session access denied error 5 out it has nothing to do with not being on the same domain or whatever. It is due to a setting related to Terminal Server. That's not to miraculous, since msg.exe is designed for
Quser Error 5
messaging to terminal users. So, changing a simple registry value and rebooting makes it all work again. Solution On the machine that you cannot message to: Use regedit to navigate to: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server Then change the following value: Name : AllowRemoteRPC Type : REG_DWORD Value : 1 Reboot. Now it should work. 🙂 Tweet From → Windows 28 Comments → wick422 permalink I did this on all my error 1722 getting session names Windows 7 HP machines and it got rid of the error 5 but now it says [username] does not exist or is disconnected. Any solution yet. I have been google-ing for about 3 hours on this and haven't found anything other than 3rd party installs which is impractical in my situation. peterdk permalink What is the exact command you give to send a message? Does the user you send the message to indeed exists on the target machine? And is it logged on there? I noticed today that it http://serverfault.com/questions/194002/how-to-query-what-users-are-logged-on-to-a-remote-servers-terminal-services has an option for querying a remote server. However, when I tried it, I keep getting the following error: C:\Users\nimmylebby>quser administrator /SERVER:remote_server Error 0x00000005 enumerating sessionnames Error [5]:Access is denied. I'm assuming it's because I do not provide a password? But I do not see an option to provide password. Here is the help doc: C:\Users\nimmylebby>quser /? Display information about users logged on to the system. QUERY USER [username | sessionname | sessionid] [/SERVER:servername] username Identifies the username. sessionname Identifies the session named sessionname. sessionid Identifies the session with ID sessionid. /SERVER:servername The server to be queried (default is current). Perhaps I'm misunderstanding the quser command? Is there a more appropriate command for this? windows command-line-interface windows-terminal-services share|improve this question asked Oct 22 '10 at 21:04 Belmin Fernandez 5,9221356110 2 possible duplicate of How to boot other Remote Desktop users –ThatGraemeGuy Oct 22 '10 at 21:51 Although this question is about how to use quser, that question is definitely helpful.
