This documentation is archived and is not being maintained. Error 53 The most common symptom of a problem in NetBIOS name resolution is when the Ping utility returns an Error 53 message. The Error 53 message is generally returned when name resolution fails for a particular computer name. Error 53 can also occur when there is a problem establishing a NetBIOS session. To distinguish betweenthese two cases, use the following procedure: To determine the cause of an Error 53 message From the Start menu, open a command prompt. At the command prompt, type: net view \\< hostname > where < hostname > is a network resource you know is active. If this works, your name resolution is probably n

Typo in the post, woops. I tried a variety of different drive letters, including ones that I successfully mapped to other servers (I unmapped them before trying with this one).Sorry for the confusion. 0Votes Share Flag Collapse - Does the folder exists? by sbx14 · 10 years ago In reply to system error 53

Posted on 2005-01-12 OS Security 1 Verified Solution 6 Comments 56,273 Views error 5 Last Modified: 2013-12-04 I'm curious why I sometimes find that I can access a remote share only with the IP address. Does anyone know why? What follows is a description of the events. Step 1: Try to "login" to a remote computer. net use \\SOMEHOST\IPC$ /user:DOMAIN\USER Observe the error System error 53 has occurred. The network path was not found. Step 2: Try to "login" to the remote computer using the system error 5 IP address First I ping SOMEHOST, to get it's IP address, then I run the command: net use \\IPADDRESS\IPC$ /user:DOMAIN\USER I'm prompted to enter the password, and then I'm logged in. After this I can map remote drives as I would expect to be able to do so. So... What is the configuration that prevents the hostname from being used? But allows the IP address to be used? How can I dis-allow both? How can I allow both? NOTE: I guess I know how to do this, it happens by default. NOTE: I'm looking for what security policys are set to allow/disallow this behavior and how security policies can be set (what tool is used). I'd also like to confirm that Win2000 Active Directory Security Policy are downloaded to domain clients (Win2000 pro clients that are in the domain). Also, Is it possible to configure this on a host by host basis? Try IDEAL Administration 2016 during 30 days on your network for free!Active Directory Management & Reporting Made Easy with IDEAL Administration 2016 The message "System error 53 has occurred. The network path was not found" is a common native message of Microsoft Windows Operating System and is not directly related to Pointdev softwareTo resolve this error, please verify the following points : - The "RemoteRegistry" service must be up and running on the remote computer. - Check that you can ping with the CMD prompt the remote host (by its IP address or by its physical NetBIOS name), and that the host answers without significant packet loss. If the remote host does not answer when it is pingued by its hostname but answer when pingued with its IP address, please check on the remote host the DNS properties. This point should be considered because a good many functionalities of our products use the name resolution when trying to to access remot hosts. - Check on the local computer and on the remote host that there is no security hardware or software blocking or filtering the communication between the local and remote machines (firewall / antivirus / router ...). If necessary rules have to be instaured (port opening, port translation ...) in order to allow the communication between the two machines.- Please be careful with Vista computer because the network security is increased. Indeed, the native Windows Vista firewall is activated by default. Check also in the network center that the network discovery and file sharing is turned on. Ensure also that the remote registry service (execute services.msc) is enabled and started (by default this service is not started on Vista OS).- Make sure the
