It still works by IP address (net view \\192.168.0.1). The server's primary IP address (as shown in "routing and remote access" as "Gigabit Ethernet" is 192.168.0.1. There is also a secondary IP address shown as "Internal" which is 192.168.0.50 The server also supports VPN. When a VPN user connects, it gets an address http://serverfault.com/questions/373247/error-53-with-local-lan-machines-after-vpn-session-on-server in the range of 192.168.0.51 to .59. Normally (when there is no error), when the local LAN client runs "ping server", it resolves to 192.168.0.1. When the Error 53 problem happens, "ping server" resolves to 192.168.0.50. This problem seems to be related to when a user connects or has recently connected to the server VPN. Is there some connection between the VPN services on the server and the DNS services on the server that could cause a local LAN client to become confused about which IP address to use for the server? Or is there a misconfiguration in the VPN or DNS? windows-7 vpn windows-server-2000 share|improve this question asked Mar 25 '12 at 20:44 tim11g 2282512 I'm still having this problem. Sometimes I can get error 53 when I use "net view \\server" but it still works by IP address (net view \\192.168.0.1), even if there has been no VPN connected. "Ping server" resolves to 192.168.0.1. The only solution I have found is rebooting the Win7 machine. So it may not be related to the VPN after all. –tim11g Jun 2 '12 at 22:50 add a comment| active oldest votes Know someone who can answer? So then I ping the server and it responds. Then I try one of the other access methods and they all work fine. Basically, I can't connect to a server until I ping it. Any ideas as to what would cause this? It happens using both system error 5 the IP and the FQDN. I've attached a screenshot of an example. I've tried a handful of other servers all across our organization and they all work fine. Whenever the windows 2008 machines tries to netuse to the windows 2003 machine, it gets : System error 53 has occurred. The network path was not found. The 2003 cannot netuse to the 2008 machine either. These two machines can ping each other by name and IP. They are in separate vlans, and have a checkpoint firewall as their default gateway and router between vlans. No local firewall on either server. I have checked both machines and made sure that Enable Netbios over tcp/ip is enabled. File and Print sharing is on on teh windows 2008 machine. File and Printer sharing for Microsoft networks is on on both machines. One thing that worries me is that the 2003 machine (when I do a net view) shows me lots of servers. When I do a net view on the 2008 machine, it only shows itself in the list.
