recently replaced with a new machine. The name of the new machine is the same as that of the old, and the names of the shares in it are also the same. Since the upgrade my Vista machine is unable to access the shares and gives me this error: "The parameter is incorrect". This occurrs when trying to open mapped drives as well as trying to access the server's root UNC path. After seeing this error I tried the "net view" command from DOS and got this: C:\>net view \\x6 System error 87 has occurred. The http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/error-87-running-dism-online-cleanup-image/33be783f-6e3f-408b-9d0c-901cd19c14ea parameter is incorrect. I've found a way to temporarily fix the problem, but after I reboot my Vista box it happens again and I need to apply the fix again. The fix is to use "net use" like this: C:\>net use \\x6\software /user:xxx\username The command completed successfully. Note that if I use my actual domain name this command fails, but if I put in an invalid one (like http://www.pcreview.co.uk/threads/problem-accessing-network-shares.3383117/ "xxx") then it succeeds. Yes, I know that's very strange. I was lucky to find this by mistyping my domain name once and was surprised that the command then worked. After issuing this command I can access the file server just fine and my mapped network drives work fine as well. So, does anyone know how I can fix this permanently? The IP Address is obtained by DHCP which seems to work because the IP Address I see seems to be correct. Starting the system with an unplugged network cable I get 0.0.0.0 as IP Address. Plugging the cable I see error 87 after a while valid IP Address. I set the IP Address of the DNS server and the WINS server to the same value which I obtained from the Windows 7 System I try to connect to. The target is a Windows 7 Professional system. The system is on the same network. Pluging the network cable into a Windows XP machine I can make a connection using "net use K: \\Nbhersacher\Users\Public\Documents\Eschke

What are some suggestions for troubleshooting such an error? EDIT @ 11:16AM 3/8/2013: ======================================================================== This didn’t work last night: C:>net use z: \\uwhc-sas2\SASHIMC /USER:SVCdatamgmt thepassword System error 1909 has occurred. The referenced account is currently locked out and may not be logged on to. ======================================================================== Waited 30 minutes and then this worked (without domain): C:>net use z: \\uwhc-sas2\SASHIMC /USER:SVCdatamgmt thepassword The command completed successfully. C:>net use z: /delete z: was deleted successfully. ======================================================================== This also works (with domain): C:>net use z: \\uwhc-sas2\SASHIMC /USER:UWHIS\SVCdatamgmt thepassword The command completed successfully. ======================================================================== But this doesn’t work (with fully qualified domain name): C:>net use z: \\uwhc-sas2\SASHIMC /USER:uwhc-sas2.uwhis.hosp.wisc.edu\SVCdatamgmt thepassword System error 86 has occurred. The specified network password is not correct. =================================================
