Did you install the C compiler and related build utilites? Code: sudo apt-get install build-essential You are probably going to need a lot more than just that though. Is there a reason you need to upgrade the GTK libraries? Don't try to make something "fast" until you are able to quantify "slow". ["solved"] Last night I started doing an 'emerge -uD world' on my desktop and ran into trouble. After the first package (sys-devel/gcc-config-1.3.11-r4) next error c compiler in line was sys-libs/glibc-2.3.5 which would fail saying Code: checking for i686-pc-linux-gnu-gcc... i686-pc-linux-gnu-gcc checking for suffix of object files... configure: error: cannot compute suffix of object files: cannot compile See `config.log' for more details. !!! ERROR: sys-libs/glibc-2.3.5 failed. !!! Then I realized that for example GKrellm2 had started sagfaulting on me. After that nothing would compile. gcc complains: Code: *** The command 'gcc -o conftest -O2 -march=i686 conftest.c' failed. *** You must set the environment variable CC to a working compiler. !!! ERROR: sys-devel/gcc-3.3.5.20050130-r1 failed. !!! Function gcc_do_configure, Line 1128, Exitcode 1 !!! failed to run configure and all the rest would say: Code: checking for i686-pc-linux-gnu-gcc... i686-pc-linux-gnu-gcc checking for C compiler default output file name... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables See `config.log' for more details. !!!
