Html Error Checking
09, 2012 In this article you'll construct and validate a simple form using HTML and PHP. The form is python error checking created using HTML and validation and processing of the form's contents is done with PHP. The goal is to teach you some basic HTML form elements and how their data is accessible http://www.w3schools.com/php/php_form_validation.asp to you in your PHP scripts. The form you'll create contains a number of inputs: text fields, radio buttons, a multiple-option select list, a checkbox, and a submit button. These inputs will be validated to ensure, for example, that the user has entered their name. Any errors or omissions will be highlighted with a message alongside the relevant field. The HTML Form First, let's look https://www.sitepoint.com/form-validation-with-php/ at the form. The purpose of the form is to capture user details (name, address, and email) to obtain feedback (on fruit consumption and favorite fruit) and request a brochure. Text Fields The name, address, and email fields are text input elements and can be coded like this: Name Address Email The HTML input element can have several attributes, the most important of which are the type and name attributes. type="text" defines these instances as a single-line input field to accept text. The name attribute is used to specify a name for this value. Radio Buttons 0 1 2 More than 2 Here type="radio" renders the input as a radio button. Notice how each button is assigned the same name. This is because collectively the radio buttons should be treated as a group (the user should select either 0, or 1, or 2, etc.). The value attribute differs for each button to provide the different selections that can be made. Select List

At the moment I have the form checking the fields one by one and as soon as it encounters a error it will exit without checking the rest of the fields. Is there any way I can combine all the if statements that check for errors into one. Here is the code //Code to check that the Student Name error checking php field is completed if(empty($_POST['studentName'])) { $studentNameError = "You did not enter the student name Wank"; //echo "
$studentNameError
"; exit(); } //Code to check that the Tutor Name field is completed if(empty($_POST['tutorName'] )) { echo "You did not select a tutor name. Please go back and select your name from the tutors list
"; exit(); } //Code to check that the Procedure field is completed if(empty($_POST['procedure'] )) { echo "You did not select a procedure. Please go back and enter the name of the procedure which you undertook
"; exit(); } //Code to check that the Grade field is completed if(empty($_POST['grade'] )) { echo "You did not select a grade. Please go back and select your grade from the drop down list
"; exit(); } //Code to check that the Student Reflection field is completed if(empty($_POST['studentReflection'] )) { echo "The student did not enter any comments for this procedure. Student reflection is required for each procedure. Please go back and enter any comments
"; exit(); } //Code to check if the tick box is checked that the tutor comment is entered if( !strlen($_POST['tutorComments']) && isset($_POST['alert'] )) { echo "You must enter a reason why you have clicked the alert box
"; exit(); } php forms webforms share|improve this question asked Jun 24 '11 at 9:34 Mattrsa 2516 add a comment| 5 Answersuser. It is also required to add server side form validation in your form processing script. The user can disable Javascript on their server or even auto-bots might try to submit your form as well. The server side form validations help keeping the form submission data consistent. The validations also help in lesser server side errors. For example, if you have set length limit in the database for a text input, it is better to do the validation before it actually gets cut off by the database system or even getting an error thrown. Form validation vs form security checks Often, people confuse form validations with form security. Form security (preventing exploits like SQL injection, XSS attacks etc ) are to be handled in addition to form validation. Form validation is focussed towards the user input where as the security validations should be focused on how you use the data. When you use the form data in an SQL query, it should be validated against SQL Injection. When you have fields like name or email as mandatory in the form, it should be checked in the server side script as well. That is Form validation. How does the form data look like ? We have a sample form here with common fields like name, email, a check box group, radio group, drop down list etc. Form HTML code:
