(JEE) application that we've been working on since 2006 (allhomes.com.au) from the venerable JBoss 4.2.3 all the way to RedHat JBoss 7.1.1. Although the transition went reasonably smoothly we did notice some surprising behavioural changes in the way JBoss handles transactions. In particular, we noticed that bean managed transactions are handled quite differently by the Arjuna (now JBoss Transactions) transaction reaper. In our legacy application we had several Servlets that managed their own transactions. They did so using a base class that looks like: Although it was manually rolled, this piece of code has been in the foundations of this heavily trafficked web application (2 million+ pageviews daily) for six years. After migrating to JBoss AS 7.1 we noticed that we were seeing an unusual number of exceptions during testing. These exceptions were all occurring on the same connector thread. The exception was consistently: 00:10:00,230 WARN [business] (ajp--0.0.0.0-10109-33) Failed to render [MaggosServlet]: javax.persistence.PersistenceException: org.hibernate.exception.GenericJDBCException: Could not open connection ... The servlet handling the image upload was reading the image data in the render method - inside the transaction context. For large slow to upload images this meant that the transaction became eligible for reaping. Reproducing the Problem We were a
