to programme a 16F785 from a ICD 3 yet on connection to the target board I get Error 0086, Target Device (00003fe0) does not match expected device ID 00001200. The data sheet identifies that the 16F785 Device should have an ID of 00001200 so why is ICD 3 reading 3FE0? I have checked the connections and the rules regarding components (caps, diodes, and pull-ups) and I am fully conforming to the in circuit programming rules. I am using

MPLAB IDE version 8.83 with MS Windows 7. If I run ICD 3 with the ICD 3 Test Interface Module connected instead of my Taget board it fully passes the test so this tells me that my ICD 3 is operational. The ICD is not reading anything but highs and therefore the DevID appears to be 0x3FE0 after it is masked. Remove the PIC and see that you get the same result. Depending on the ICD circuit you may need to pull the PGD line high to simulate this condition. Bottom line, ICD <-> PIC no talkies. The DevID "error" is just how it first manifests. Almost always DevID = 0x0000 or DevID = DEVID_MASK means no connection between the programm
