This module was added by Jeffrey Whitaker back in 2005 and it is not actively maintained (in fact, Jeffrey started his own NetCDF wrapper in http://code.google.com/p/netcdf4-python/). My advice is to get rid completely of this module for the next major version (2.3?). I'll add a ticket on this.
