ago #347 closed defect (invalid) invalid SMART checksum bug Reported by: anemmer Owned by: Priority: minor Milestone: Component: smartctl Version: 5.39.1 Keywords: Cc: Description I am getting an "invalid SMART checksum" error when I run smartctl and there is not documentation for it and I can't find anything on the web about it so I think it may be a bug. Please investigate. Thank you. Oldest first Newest first Threaded Comments only Change History (4) comment:1 Changed 2 years ago by samm2 Message itself indicates that SMART data coming from drive has uncorrect chipset. This could be caused by different reasons, including firmware/drive issues, OS or controller bug. If you want some help please provide more details about your OS and hardware. Before reporting please update to the recent smartmontools version and if bug is reproducible - send smartctl full output to this ticket. comment:2 Changed 2 years ago by chrfranke Keywords invalid smart checksum bug removed The "invalid SMART checksum" warning is often reported for still empty SMART error or self-test logs. This is harmless and could be ignored. Please provide a sample output as attachment(!) to this ticket. comment:3 Changed 2 years ago by anemmer smartctl 5.39.1 2010-01-28 r3054 [i486-slackware-linux-gnu] (local build) Copyright (C) 2002-10 by Bruce Allen, http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net === START OF INFORMATION SECTION === Model Family: Hitachi Deskstar 7K80 series Device Model: HDS728080PLAT20 Serial Number: PFD219SYU97E1E Firmware Version: PF2OA2AA User Capacity: 82,348,277,760 bytes Device is: In smartctl database [for details use: -P show] ATA Version is: 7 ATA Standard is: ATA/ATAPI-7 T13 1532D revision 1 Local Time is: Tue Aug 19 11:56:41 2014 MST SMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability. tests - hangs, does not complete. emarkayJuly 19th, 2011, 08:11 PM204GB ATA Maxtor 6B200R0 BAH41E00 firmware. Utility says "disk is Healthy" - and no errors show. However both the Short https://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1807823.html and Extended self tests hang near the end of the progress bar -; over 2 hours or more. I have been having an occasional metallic click from the PC, then things stop responding https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=893226 and strange things happen until a full power off is done. I think is coming from this drive (the other a 250GB 7L250R0 tests fine). Currently, this disk is has had 2348 error in power cycles, and is 48C (CPU is 61C, GPU is 54C) for thermal issues, and it's the #1 PC in the sig for reference. It's in an older homebrew PC with a SIS 661FM2 mainboard and a Celeron processor. Any other tests to try? Thanks! psusiJuly 19th, 2011, 08:53 PMThe long test often takes several hours, are you sure that you let it go long enough? error in attribute Install the smartmontools package and post the output of sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda. emarkayJuly 19th, 2011, 09:21 PMSDA - the "good" one: smartctl version 5.38 [i686-pc-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-8 Bruce Allen Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/ === START OF INFORMATION SECTION === Model Family: Maxtor MaXLine III family (ATA/133 and SATA/150) Device Model: Maxtor 7L250R0 Serial Number: L50VJELH Firmware Version: BAH41G10 User Capacity: 251,000,193,024 bytes Device is: In smartctl database [for details use: -P show] ATA Version is: 7 ATA Standard is: ATA/ATAPI-7 T13 1532D revision 0 Local Time is: Tue Jul 19 16:14:58 2011 EDT SMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability.
