Check for syntax errors in CONFIG.SYS and that the files (c:\windows\himem.sys, c:\windows\emm386.exe. c:\windows\setver.exe) it references actually exist and are not corrupted.2. Determine which Device or Service has failed to start, and whether that is because the associated files are missing or corrupted.3. Re-install Windows with Repair option, then use WindowsUpdate to repair security holes. Ago I just formatted the hard drive with one partition and installed WIN98SE, 4.10 2222A. When the program boots it gets to the initial screen and then crashes the system. It has never really fully https://www.daniweb.com/hardware-and-software/microsoft-windows/threads/15625/there-is-an-error-in-your-config-sys-file-on-line-2 installed itself. Just prior to the boot to windows I get the error message: There is an error in your config.sys file on line 2 There is also another warning that states: The following file is https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=15507.0 missing or corrupted: A:\VIDE-CDD.SYS. The machine will boot in a safe mode. Any help would be appreciated. Happy Holidays! I did as you said with the zipped file and put them in the root (C) directory. I made sure that they were there and also made sure that the second line in the config.sys file addressed that the files were in the root i. e. DEVICE=C:\VIDE-CDD.SYS. I then rebooted (no errors this time) and when the program went to update the system files it got partially through that and then closed the windows opening page and reverted back to DOS with the message: Windows Protection Error - Press any key to restart program. So, it appears that something else in going on. At present I'm reinstalling the entire WIN98SE but do not hold out for any success. Thanks for your talents. Win98 SE config.sys Am I wrong ? « on: August 05, 2005, 10:10:22 AM » I'm getting error messages at boot up about lines 1 & 2 of the config.sys : DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYSDEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXEDOS=HIGH,UMBI'm working at recycling old computers and giving them to charities, and have always used thes lines :HIMEM.SYS to enable access to extended memory and load DOS into high memory;EMM.386.EXE, To enable expanded memory and to use upper memory as though it was conventional memory.HIGH,UMB ; to load as much of DOS into high memory. It's not a huge problem, I want these pentium 2's to work as well as possible, and i know that only HIMEN.SYS is required for Win 98 , but if some one could give me some advice as to whether what I've written into config.sys as being appropriate I'd be much appreciated.I've looked around microsoft knowledge base and the net, and done a search here...and dug up my notes from school. Thanks ! « Last Edit: August 05, 2005, 12:24:53 PM by Abraxas » Logged Initial Windows OS Malware CleanUp Instructions|Need Further Help ?|Start a New Thread Here please Lisandro Avast team Certainly Bot Posts: 66695 Re: Win98 SE config.sys Am I wrong ? « Reply #1 on: August 05, 2005, 01:45:49 PM » This is an old config.sys of mine.
