I tried initially using ifcfg-eth0:1 but it woudl give an error that I didn't specify device or ipaddr, so I added an additional NIC (these are VM servers) and configured it as DHCP (ifcfg-eth1, but the dhcp addresses were in the same subnet block as the static IPs). This seemed to work initially but then I noticed that the static IP received an additional IP address and that the routing table was trying to route both static and dhcp to the same destination (and this would eventually cause the box to stop receiving ssh requests) I would appreciate any suggestions you may have The error I get when I try to restart the network service: error in ifcfg-eth0:1: didn't specify device or ipaddr The static config: DEVICE=eth0 HWADDR=xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx TYPE=Ethernet UUID=4afddb05-5eb9-4c55-a8e4-cbe1abb36898 ONBOOT=yes NM_CONTROLLED=no BOOTPROTO=static IPADDR=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx NETMASK=255.255.254.0 The DHCP config: DEVICE=eth0:1 HWADDR=xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx (same as the static config) TYPE=Ethernet UUID=4afddb05-5eb9-4c55-a8e4-cbe1abb36898 ONBOOT=yes NM_CONTROLLED=no BOOTPROTO=dhcp DHCP_HOSTNAME=firstDHCP PEERDNS=no linux networking centos share|improve this question asked Oct 12 '15 at 12:17 Frederick Knapp 1 Boot proto isn't valid in subinterfaces –

I copied my ifcfg-eth0 to ifcfg-eth0:1 error in and set its content to this: DEVICE=eth0:1 HWADDR=[The MAC address from eth0] ONBOOT=yes BRIDGE=br1 I then created ifcfg-br1 with this content: DEVICE=br1 TYPE=Bridge BOOTPROTO=static BROADCAST=192.168.2.255 IPADDR=192.168.2.202 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 NETWORK=192.168.2.0 ONBOOT=yes DELAY=0 When I do service network restart, I get error in didn this error: error in ifcfg-eth0:1: didn't specify device or ipaddr I specified the device so it looks like it wants an IP address but that is contrary to what I am reading on the Internet. Any ideas what went wrong?
